TOC drivers who are already in the RPS can transfer straight into the FL RPS FS scheme. Trainees or those joining from non-RPS TOCs/OTMs have to do 3 years in the DC scheme before joining the FS scheme.

On a tamper operating shift I'd use miles, chains, metres, millimetres, half chords and yards. Start/end of mileage was miles and chains. Total distance tamped was yards. Geometry was inputted in half chords (10m) Lift and slue was in millimeters.

I think Tom is perhaps over stating the risks involved with driving OTMs. I was on tampers for 10 years. There were around 35 drivers and in that time I think there were 5 spads, 2 of which were so technical that the driver's next employers weren't at all concerned. You have to protect yourself...

OTM drivers do a full rules course, obviously not passenger specific modules, just as passenger drivers don't do freight white pages or T3/OTM modules. TOCs or FOCs do conversion training. I and all my ex colleagues hold a European Train Driving Licence.
