For the first time today I saw indicators stating whether or not services were 9 or 11 cars; this was at Birmingham International.

Set 42 has had the H3 overhaul but has been released back into service as a nine car. It's first revenue earning service is today's (13th November 2012) 1R07 0533 Preston to Euston. It is thought that the 32nd in the list for H3 overhaul will replace it as an eleven car, set 42 will not be recalled for lengthening. There was some problem regarding parts on the two vehicles which were due to convert set 42 from nine to eleven cars.
390123 390135 390138 390142 now 11 car. James
Indeed ainsworth74, however in most of the cases I've experienced they tend to be wrong!
can someone tell me what extra coches have been added to make up 11 unit
The two new vehicles seem to be located just off centre.
Cab coach, Coach, Pantograph coach,
New coach, New pantograph(esqe)*, Coach,
Coach, Coach, Coach,
Pantograph coach, Coach, Cab coach.
* = There is of course only two pantographs the third coach that looks similar has the lower roof area to accomodate switch gear only.
Not quite right, as Eagle has set out correctly the two new carriages are situated with four carriages on one side (The first class end) and five on the other (The existing standard class carriages). The new carriage that includes the third transformer and the pantograph well, coach U, is located against the first class section of the train. The new Coach F is located dead centre. The two new vehicles seem to be located just off centre. I you are watching them whizz by then they are to the London/first-class end. The result is from the South :-
Cab coach, Coach, Pantograph coach,
New coach, New pantograph(esqe)*, Coach,
Coach, Coach, Coach,
Pantograph coach, Coach, Cab coach.
* = There is of course only two pantographs the third coach that looks similar has the lower roof area to accomodate switch gear only.
So if you want to check without counting then note the extra coach with the lowered roof like a pantograph coach.
Hope this makes sense - been a long day.
390004 been extended to 11 car 390104 followed by 390015 to become 390115. Thats the 31st & final 390 to be extended. Hope that helps. James
So that's gonna make all future EMU listings look a bit weird! Anyone want to help me out with posting a list of the 31 renumbered 390s? Can't be bothered going through every page of this thread!![]()
390103, 390104, 390107, 390112, 390114, 390115, 390117, 390118, 390119, 390121-390139 (excluding 390033 which was written off in the Grayrigg derailment), 390141, 390148, 390151, 390152 and 390153.
Although I've counted 32 sets here and only 31 have been converted; don't know how I've done that!
104 has been done, 015 and 052 to awaiting conversion to 11 car sets and thus renumbered 115 and 152
039 is a 9 car set and isnt a 11 car set
Is there a reason they did not lengthen the highest numbered 9 car units so that they run in sequence leading into the as built 11 car units?
Is it due to the order in which they were due an overhaul?
