For the first time today I saw indicators stating whether or not services were 9 or 11 cars; this was at Birmingham International.

I think might be quite an old change as they've been at other stations for a while now I've definitely seen them at Manchester, Carlisle and Glasgow.

Indeed ainsworth74, however in most of the cases I've experienced they tend to be wrong!

Last two pairs of pendolino coaches delivered ths morning (on their way North as I type). They are numbered xxxx34 & xxxx35 they are NOT set numbers but as the first four were numbered xxxx05 to xxxx08 the numbering would make xxxx35 the last/31st one so the TEMPORARY coach numbers corroborate the statement that this is the last delivery. Thats assuming they came in order.

Set 42 has had the H3 overhaul but has been released back into service as a nine car. It's first revenue earning service is today's (13th November 2012) 1R07 0533 Preston to Euston. It is thought that the 32nd in the list for H3 overhaul will replace it as an eleven car, set 42 will not be recalled for lengthening. There was some problem regarding parts on the two vehicles which were due to convert set 42 from nine to eleven cars.

I guess from the post above dated 13/11/2012 that some other set has had its H3 overhaul done but missed the insertion of extra coaches as well so makes sense they wont retrospectively extend. I work this out because if the 31st H3 has just been done on unit 42 then two sets have missed the opportunity to be extended since, according to this thread, 29 units have so far been extended. There are two pairs on their way North now so two out of the first 31 H3s must have missed them. Perhaps number 42 could not be done because the coaches were not yet in the UK. Hopefully the problems were found in testing back in Europe (Italy iirc).

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
390123 390135 390138 390142 now 11 car. James

Just spotted the conundrum. Unit 42 already done as per post on 02/11/2012 ??.

CAN anyone confirm unit 390042 lengthened and re-numbered 390142 or not ?.

Last Sunday's 15:37 ex EUS to MAN was shown at Stockport as 11 car formation with the 1st Class coaches being at the Manchester end of the formation.

They got the 11 car bit right.:D

Not sure which pendos are going to be 11 car sets next but 004 and 042 are going to remain 9 car sets.

The seats are exactly the same colour as the older coaches, I believe they are identical too. The new coaches are F and U on a Pendolino.

390004 been extended to 11 car 390104 followed by 390015 to become 390115. Thats the 31st & final 390 to be extended. Hope that helps. James

The two new vehicles seem to be located just off centre. I you are watching them whizz by then they are to the London/first-class end. The result is from the South :-

The following is my original post BUT is WRONG (not 12 coaches and I put the New coach nearer one end ).
Cab coach, Coach, Pantograph coach,
New coach, New pantograph(esqe)*, Coach,
Coach, Coach, Coach,
Pantograph coach, Coach, Cab coach.

The following is my best guess :-
Cab coach, Coach, Pantograph coach,
Coach (or possibly New coach),
New pantograph(esqe)*, New coach (or possibly Coach),
Coach, Coach,
Pantograph coach, Coach, Cab coach

* = There is of course only two pantographs the third coach that looks similar has the lower roof area to accomodate switch gear only.

So if you want to check without counting then note the extra coach with the lowered roof like a pantograph coach.

Hope this makes sense - been a long day.

Surely there's another coach between the first pantograph coach and first new coach (i.e. the 'normal' carriage G), and one less normal coach after the two new coaches?

Not quite right, as Eagle has set out correctly the two new carriages are situated with four carriages on one side (The first class end) and five on the other (The existing standard class carriages). The new carriage that includes the third transformer and the pantograph well, coach U, is located against the first class section of the train. The new Coach F is located dead centre.

I have amended my above post as it was TOTAL TOSH. In my bleary eyed attempts to get the coach order right (or suitably vague) I ended up with twelve coaches . Apologies.

So that's gonna make all future EMU listings look a bit weird! Anyone want to help me out with posting a list of the 31 renumbered 390s? Can't be bothered going through every page of this thread!

390103, 390104, 390107, 390112, 390114, 390115, 390117, 390118, 390119, 390121-390139 (excluding 390033 which was written off in the Grayrigg derailment), 390141, 390148, 390151, 390152 and 390153.

Although I've counted 32 sets here and only 31 have been converted; don't know how I've done that!

I think your extra one could be one of 104, 115 and 152 - that of course makes a list of 29 with 2 further ones to do.

104 has been done, 015 and 052 to awaiting conversion to 11 car sets and thus renumbered 115 and 152

So which one is extra in the list? Are there not 32 in Dan's list, and are there not only 31 being extended?

Is there a reason they did not lengthen the highest numbered 9 car units so that they run in sequence leading into the as built 11 car units?
Is it due to the order in which they were due an overhaul?

The sets were reformed in the order that they were due their H3 overhauls, which are mileage based, i.e the sets with the highest mileage were reformed first.

All extended.

Celebratory puff piece tomorrow 11am at Euston featuring 390157 especially wrapped in vinyls for the event. They're probably giving away free stuff so pop in if you're in the area.
