May I ask, how can there be five left? From that list, it states that 001, 002, 004, 005, 006, 008, 009, 010, 011, 013, 015, 016, 020, 023, 035, 038, 039, 040, 042, 043, 044, 045, 046, 047, 049, 050 and 052 are still to be extended, or are not all sets being altered? If so I do apologise.

31 units are being extended. 21 units stay as 9 car.

Unfortunately :( I really think that the whole fleet should have been extended, I'm a but surprised that neither Virgin nor First seemed to have that as part of their bids.

The vast majority of people will no doubt agree with you, but those in charge of the railways don't always use common sense.

The people in charge of the railways DO agree with you, but DaFT dont, there is the problem.
No forward planning for the increase in ridership on the WCML that will no doubt take the DaFT by surprise and we (the taxpayer) will have to pay for another expensive procurement process to fix a problem which was easily preventable with a bit of foresight by the bean-counters at the DaFT.
But then as long as the budget is sorted for this year never mind the costs of correcting the short term ideology in the future.

So I make that, 33 currently 11 car :-

Converted from 9-car to 11-car :-
390103, 107,
112, 114, 117, 118, 119,
121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129,
130, 131, 132, 134, 135, 136, 137, 138,
141, 142, 148,
151, 153.

Plus delivered as 11-car :-
390154, 155, 156, 157.

So two more left to convert to make 31 converted and 21 remaining unconverted out of the original 390001-053. Remember 390033 is written off (CORRECTED as I originally thought it was 31).

Has anyone seen/know of a list showing what was delivered and what unit they ended up with. I ask because the delivery numbers bore no relation to the units thay actually ended up in. As far as I can tell the coaches have been re-numbered.

Memory tells me from something I saw in The Railway Magazine a while ago that the coaches weren't numbered until they were inserted into a 390.

On a more personal note, I wonder if 390103 will be my last 390/1 to see, purely because it was my last 390 to see the first time as 390003. Wouldn't surprise me if it was!

Oh, and I'm sure 154 - 157 were only numbered as such after acceptance, having been numbered as /0s previously.

No, Peter Sarf is correct. The new Pendolino carriages were temporarily numbered sequentially in the order that they came across for the trip from Italy, and they were then renumbered at Longsight to match the set that they were inserted into.

It was 390033 that was written off at Grayrigg.

Can none of the coaches from the city of Glasgow Train be Salvaged? i thought 4 where used as a fire brigade test site?

They could be, but to make sure they were structurally sound they would basically need to be completely taken apart so it is in fact easier and cheaper just to build new coaches.

There being used as training vehicles for VT staff I seem to recall, there's a google earth image of them in a field out the back of a VT office somewhere or other.

Two carriages from 390033 are used for staff training at Virgin's Academy in Crewe - The first class driving car and the standard class pantograph car. A further two carriages, both first class vehicles, are in store at Long Marston, awaiting disposal, and another two, a motor first and a motor standard, are used for training exercises at the Fire Training College at Moreton in Marsh.

The remaining three carriages of 390033 have been scrapped.

Once the 11 car upgrade is complete do we know if they will have 11 car sets on specific diagrams. It will stop me guessing at Glasgow whether I should walk further up the platform to be nearer the front of standard

Set 42 has had the H3 overhaul but has been released back into service as a nine car. It's first revenue earning service is today's (13th November 2012) 1R07 0533 Preston to Euston. It is thought that the 32nd in the list for H3 overhaul will replace it as an eleven car, set 42 will not be recalled for lengthening. There was some problem regarding parts on the two vehicles which were due to convert set 42 from nine to eleven cars.

At least one fault has already manifested itself on one of the new Pendolino carriages: Coach U on set 390141 had one manually operated external door this morning - The door opening mechanism wasn't working!

Technically the 11-car sets have had booked diagrams throughout the lengthening programme, although these have been in a state of perpetual limbo and have changed on a weekly basis to reflect the increasing number of sets that have been lengthened, in order to (presumably) match the longer trains to demand. Plus of course as soon as diagrams get stepped up at Euston, as they often seem to do, then it all goes to pot.

I should think that once the lengthening programme is complete then the diagrams for 11-car sets should be quite fixed.
