After having been withdrawn from passenger use by GA, I have been curious as to whether the 9 317/7s have been put back into use during the 2012 Olympics in London. Greater Anglia is an important TOC during these two weeks, as their Great Eastern locals stop at Stratford Regional.

I have heard that the units have been kept in [non-passenger] service, which suggests that they may be used again in the near future. Trial refurbishments for similar '80s classes have been suggested.

No is the short answer, 708,709,710,714,723,729 and 732 in store at Eastleigh Works. 719 and 722 at Ilford (722 undergoing trial refurb)

719 is going North for storage somewhere on August 15th. 722 is having a trial "life-extending" refurb and is getting new toilets/seats/traction package/air con at Ilford so won't be leaving until after that. It is assumed that it will be then put in trial service with either GA or Northern to see what passengers make of it.

Isn't there a rumour that some might go to the north-west as a stop gap before the 319s can be released ?

Not sure about that one but at least (some of) the 317/7s are being used. They will probably end up being combined with the 12 GN 317/1s and transferred elsewhere, but that leaves me wondering about the other fleets to be displaced.

I thought that the 317/7s and 319s will get the same refurbishment (if the trial is a success) and all go to Northern, aside from the GW 319s.

While Northern is aware they are off lease and would fill the role of temporary standins for 319's, Greater Anglia may gazump outbidding and taking them back again so they can rotate their other 317's through the refurbs without losing capacity.

I imagine that the 317/7s as well as the 317/1s, 319s, 321/4s (and 365s?) released by the Thameslink "700" will receive similar internal refurbishments, as well as new traction packages, possibly.

The Bombardier "Electrostar" traction system is going to be retrofitted? I assume the article refers to the Anglia 317s, but could the 321s and the PEP 313s/315s be done as well?

I would suggest looking at merging the two threads.

Yes I think the class 313/314/315 PEP emu's could be fitted with new traction equipment etc especially since they are being looked at for use on the Cardiff Valley Lines network as opposed to new rolling stock.

I am sure the Scotish Government may be considering life extending the class 314's as opposed to say ordering additional class 380's

If the 317s were refurbished to the same standard as the Class 455s with SWT, this is a excellent idea!

The 317s need refurbishing to 317/6 standard internally, whilst mechanically I suspect what is currently being done on 722 will keep them going for some time yet. I'll miss the scream from a 317 attempting to make it to 100mph though!

I think the 315's are only being looked at operating the Cardiff Metro for 5 years before being replaced (2020-2025 ish), that might not be enough time to pay off a heavy refurb, the 317's on the other hand would have a refurbish in 2016/17 and probably see another decade of service.

I'd hope they can do better than that - last time I was on a 317/6, several of the seat cushions had fallen off!
The seat bases are quite easy to remove (actually the seat backs are too). Quite easy to put back, if you know how.

I am not sure if it's something revenue officers are officially told in training, but I heard one telling newbies that the seat bases can be flipped up and used as a shield if being threatened with a knife. The bit that hooks in to hold the base down effectively becomes the handle.

^ I like that! That is, if there are any free seats.

Hopefully, the refurbishment will allow the trains to last for at least a decade more. IMO all EMUs up to the Class 321 (or 322?) that are being kept in use should be progressively refurbished. It sounds like they'll basically be Electrostars with an '80s shell... How about 'Retrostar' ?

Or to ressurect a previous idea for Class 4xx EMU renewal, how about "Electrostar Classic"?

Cheers,

Or fit them with much better sounding Juniper motors and much more comfortable Juniper interiors, which I would do if I was in charge. Although admittedly I can't think of a catchy name for that

I'd rather the 455s were refurbished to match the comfort of the 317/5 and 317/8 fleet ( which still have their original well shaped nice soft seats )...

I wonder if "metro-style seating" means 2+2 with wide vestibules or longitudinal? Plenty of European trains have left the works looking completely different so I hope they do something about the front ends.

I like the interiors of the 317/6s, shame WAGN never got round to bringing the rest of the 317s to the same interior specification!

I still remember my first trip on one, Liverpool Street to Cambridge :)

Indeed, FCCs 317s are getting into a state now.

Are you kidding me?! They're the best looking of any of the 317s!

You're right the 317/7s were certainly the most pleasing. It was a shame other members of the class didn't receive the same front-end redesign. Even the second batch of Stansted blue liveried units missed out I believe.

317714 is also at Ilford- well, it was last week. I half expected GA to hire in 714 & 719 as extra stock for the during the Olympics but they've not made an appearance.
