Hello all, at 19:45 today (3rd November) I pulled into Raynes Park platform 4, to see a Cl 450 stopping at platform 2, letting passengers off and everything. What was this doing on a stopper? I know a few stop at Wimbledon late at night on Basingstoke runs, but not this early or at Raynes Park.

    Thanks.

That would be 2H62 1906 Shepperton to Waterloo, formed of the stock off the 1813 Waterloo to Shepperton via Richmond. It's a booked 450 job every night.

    That's a long train!

If I was at very close proximity to Shpperton or similar, say if I was visiting my father [which ironically I did have the chance to do], I would have gone on it to give Mr Taylor a nasty surprise.

Some would say that that's the best use they could make of them.

    Yes its-
2H94 0730 Shepperton to Waterloo via Richmond, (I think, its been a while ;)).

    Interestingly the 455 that works 2H96 0800 SHP-WAT (0904 platform15) then works-
2R17 0915 Wat-Wat (1041 plat 16) (via Richmond and Hounslow) giving the unusual sight of a 455 around the Hounslow loop on a weekday.

As does the 08:02 arrival from Shepperton via Richmond forms the 08:15 Hounslow via Richmond from platform 16 in the mornings which ive worked quite a few times.

There's a often a Desiro at about at Hampton 18:21, suppose this a is ex-Richmond service?

P.S. it always seems to be a low-capacity one (i.e. not 450541-570) What are the First Class arrangements on these services?

Yes that is 2H93 1743 Waterloo- Shepperton via Richmond.
Standard class only so the First class is declassified, it can be any unit depending what has been under maintenance at Strawberry Hill (its ECS to WAT to form 2H93).

Incorrect, 5H93 is a pair of 455s and is worked by Strawberry Hill crew. Probably it is the return working of the 1713 Waterloo-Shepperton, the 1806 from Shepperton.

Its a shame they don't use the 450 Desiros on the stopper routes more often, they're quite nice units :)

They are on the Hounslow and Weybridge routes all day long, the Sheppy line will have 455s at least until the end of the SWT franchise as far as I can see.

How about swapping some 450s for 455s to overcome the people of Portsmouth's hatred of 'blue trains' with 2+3 seating?

Red trains with 2+2 seating - job done... <D

I notice at times that Class 450's appear on the London Waterloo - Reading Service and the service from Ascot to Guildford is now sometimes worked by Class 458 rather than a class 450??

The Ascot - Guildford service has been diagrammed for a while for 5 units on weekdays, of which 3 x 450 and 2 x 458. The Sat and Sun services are all 450.

However Waterloo - Reading is almost all normally 458, with a single return 450 in the early evening on weekdays some time IIRC.

You say that but the last couple of days there have been 3 458 sets and only 2 450 sets on the Ascot branch. I have heard about the depot (now this is just a rumour) that soon it will only be 458's operating on the Guildford - Ascot Branch.

Ahh its white trains they want isn't it? Mind you I wouldn't mind swapping a 455 for 450, however my swt useage genrally only stretches to Raynes Park, so even if they arrive on some slower routes, I doubt I'll be in luck :P

If they want white trains then... 458s? :D

I'd happily do Portsmouth Harbour - Waterloo on one, as long as I have a backwards facing window seat on the 3 side.

It is 2 x 458 and 3 x 450 that is in the CWNs, (and in next year's as well). But depending on unit availability on a day to day basis it is possibly one of the easiest routes to swap around, as it only uses single 4 car units. What I'm thinking is that if they need a spare 458 for Reading they'll pull it off Ascot/Guildford and sub a 450, basically because a single 450 is no use to the Reading route...

However I've also heard the rumours about it becoming a 458 only service. This was with respect to the proposed 458/460 merger - and was supposedly because there will be half a dozen 4 car units left unchanged, and these will become the dedicated units for that route on a 5 + 1 spare basis.

Sadly for the 455 fans they are barred south of Haslemere, and the 75mph speed limit of 455s would be a problem too!

But if the 458/460 merger goes ahead what route will they be used on?
Does that mean that we might see Class 450's be put back on the Waterloo - Reading route?

5 car units would be used in pairs to provide for the 10 car strengthened suburban routes that currently use 450/5s; Windsors, Hounslow loop, Weybridge etc.

So as you've surmised 450s would have to transfer to the Readings - it isn't clear yet if they'd be reverted to the normal 450 layout, but it seems likely if there's any sort of First Class usage on that route.
