There are groups in the Marriott at the moment in York... So not too shabby, and yes there is a small fitness suite. Obviously things could be different for you, but you will be told soon enough when you get your course info.

We had 3 weeks in the Uni of York campus a good 30 minute bus trip from the station.

3 weeks in the Holdiay Inn next to the river in town which was nice, 2 weeks in the Ebbis that wasn’t to bad but a good 20 minute walk.

With a week at a hotel out by the race course which was okay, but a long walk.

Marriott sounds nice! Not so sure about the uni halls!

Either way, looking forward to a new career!

Anyone else here successful for Cardiff?

There is a food allowance for your travelling up day on Friday, and also keep any bus tickets or food receipts from Sunday you can claim the cost back.

Good to know, thanks for that!

Is signalling school a formal or casual affair by way of dress code? (sorry for all the questions)

Surely the LOMs should be giving their new starts this sort of information before they go to the school.

I wasn't sure if like said NR take the chance to do work, you get enforced leave or even unpaid leave. But yeah, obviously jump to a negative connotation I find that massively disrespectful for you so suggest I want to be paid to do nothing.
I would worry too much mate, us signallers love getting paid for nothing! Although I cant remember the last time my location was all blocked up....

I have an interview next week, can anyone answer my question please. Is the interview competency based questions or more of a formal chat based around CV?
Cheers in advance.

Your CV wont be mentioned. Read the thread from start to finish and you'll have every answer to any questions you may have.

That's what I was trying to avoid, I guess I will get stuck in then.

Have you had an Interview for this role before?

I have. You don't want to avoid it, I read this thread once when applying and again when I had been confirmed an interview. It is your best source of information for it and you'd kick yourself if you didn't get it and hadn't read it. Some very very good advice from people far more knowledgeable than I .

Thankyou, I will give it a go. You're right though these forums definitely are a great source of info for anything rail. Thanks again.

Passed my medical for grade 2 signal box at Monks Sidings last week. Received contact from my new line manager today who advised the next signalling school date would be march/april is this correct?

Firstly congratulations, and welcome to the club !!!!!

April time sounds about right to be honest, a lad from my place has recently got a Signaller job from crossing keeper he’s going to a AB box, his course has literally just started last week so by the time they finish it’ll be around April - that’s if your going to York.

I’d assume you’d probably spend some time in your new SB, do a few visits and other waste some time bits before school.

Thank you very much.

I pressume im going to York, York did get mentioned in my interview. I was hoping my start date would be sooner, I may have a month or 2 before I start with no wages. I suppose I better get saving.

It goes from one extreme of one day prior to school, to several months.

After a few weeks it does get boring sitting round doing nothing.

Yes it does.

Im currently in the police and my 2 year probation runs out on the 27th Feb so my notice will need to be in before that date as they will not keep me on knowing Im going to another job.

So, grade 2 at Cardiff! Looks like the're trying to get me into York signalling school for 7th January!!! cant wait!!

Not looking forward to being away from the family for 12 weeks but hopefully worth it in the long run!!

Anyone know what hotel I will be living in for that duration? Just wondering what sort of luxuries (or not!) it may have like a gym etc

Hi mate,

As someone that has just finished signalling school I can give you a little info!!! Hotels vary from a 5 min walk, to a 45 min walk, to a 20odd minute walk!

Food wise, you get free breakfast, £5.50 for lunch at the WDC (training center) and £25 for dinner (not including alcohol).
Dress code is smart casual and literally everyone there wore jeans t shirts and hoodies with a pair of trainers. No shorts and no hats.

As for gyms, it depends where your located. We joined a gym called emperors gym in Middletons gym, quite a few people joined this as well!

We were located in one hotel for the duration, where there were a couple of groups that changed half way through the course!

All in all a good course, hard work but enjoyable. The more you put in, the more you get out.. old saying but true. Work with your group, do a little bit of revision each night and plenty of sim practice and you’ll be fine!!!

Enjoy!!!!

Another Bobby on the job lol, you’ll find there’s a lot of similarities between the two jobs. Best of luck mat .

When I went for interview was told Jan 7th after that was April. The one in Jan might be full around your way.
