The Forum Staff have decided to make a couple of changes to the structure of the Forum to recongise feedback from our members and the changing nature of content being posted.

Threads about speculative ideas and proposals from members will, in future, be located in a specialist sub forum entitled Speculative Ideas. This area will be a safe area for people to float their ideas and receive feedback on them.

As a general guide we would expect all threads currently covered by this rule to be in this area:

In addition we will shortly be moving all content regarding actual confirmed High Speed works and development from the Future High Speed Rail sub forum, into the relevant UK Railway forum areas. The relevant remaining threads will then be moved to the Speculative Ideas forum.

We have also been working on a few minor tweaks the forums functionality to ensure it operates how we intend following the transfer to the current software. We hope you approve of these changes which will be made over the next few days.

I like the idea of a Speculative Ideas area.
At least some of our members that seem to explode at the mere idea of branch line reopening schemes will be able to avoid the section for their own sanity.
Or at least count to ten before clicking on it and then spitting their tea at the monitor.

Good thinking regarding for the speculative ideas forum. Such ideas often don't fit easily under other specialist headings as they might include elements of infrastructure, stock and timetabling etc, so usually end up clogging up the UK Railway topic. Will the speculative ideas section be limited to UK mainline rail proposals or also permit ideas for other transport modes and international?

Should the title of this thread be "My idea for a Speculative Ideas subforum"? :D

Just UK Railway, as that's the category it's in.

I would respectfully request members be not too speculative in the International and Other Transport areas ;) However people can still post speculative ideas in those areas providing this does not get out of hand.

In all cases, the thread title needs to make it clear that the thread is for speculation, e.g. include phrases/prefixes such as "My idea" or "FANTASY:" or "Suggestions for". This does still apply in the Speculative Ideas section, even though once in that area it should be obvious, as many members do use the "New Posts" feature.

For the sake of forum members with high blood pressure, some of the more outrageous speculation threads should come with a Government Health Warning affixed to them or a rider such as "Do not ask for reality, as refusal often offends"

    It’s a great idea.

It’ll allow members of the Crayonista Community to engage in various hypothetical ideas without it drowning out the genuine news – there are some really interesting threads on here about *actual* developments in the industry but they can get crowded out with all the nostalgia for reopening rural railways/ Crayola-based schemes that involve wishlist stuff like Bradford Crossrail.

I’m all for wide eyed enthusiasm, but a separate section will allow those kind of speculative “My Long List Of Routes I’d Like To See Re-Opened” threads to have their own Safe Space without having to worry about the nasty cynical people who discuss awkward things like “costs” and “feasibility studies” and “business cases”.

There seem to be an increasing number of threads along the line of “If You Could Run Any Service Between Any Two Stations Via Any Re-Opened Route” – and, fair enough, there’s a market for that kind of enthusiasm – but I think it’s a good thing to segregate such things, so that the funded commitments get taken a bit more seriously than yet another “My Idea For Re-Opening Woodhead” thread.

Wouldn't light rail/trams justify it's own forum rather than be lumped with other.

Do you mean the section in general? At this point with London Underground and Buses & Coaches having their own sub-forums the only substantial thing left for Other Public Transport is light rail/trams! If you hived that off into its own sub-forum then all you'd have left would be a bit of discussion about airlines and a some stuff about ferries!

I echo the others in that I think the Speculative Ideas subforum is a great idea, indeed I’ve already started a thread in it.

Is there a reason why it’s not visible to non-members though? Some of the threads in there are very interesting and if the subforum was accessible to guests too it’s likely to encourage some to sign up.

I notice that a staff member has moved across over 400 old threads into Speculative Ideas, of which over a third are locked, which I imagine can't have been an easy task, so well done to them! I think this is a good idea, and I'm sure the threads in there will be very interesting (and good ideas) even if never likely to happen!

    It's been moved into "other".

....and I have just discovered the ability to copy and paste a screenshot into a reply has been axed, so I can't show you as I can't be bothered to do that the long way round!

I think that is because it is Forum Information and Announcements, you still seem to be able to do it elsewhere on the forum.

Yes it's not permitted in this section but otherwise the function works as normal.

It’s the second forum in the ‘Other Rail and Transport’ category.

Speculative ideas... it only appears for me when logged in.

This is good, because it means that only people who have registered, and are thus have been vetted by the mods as completely rational, can contribute.
