Annoying television adverts...

Grammarly adverts on the internet. They've been going on for years. Given that the service is supposedly free, how are all the adverts paid for?

The basic service is free, there are premium subscriptions available.
Though most of the comments I’ve heard about Grammarly have been from IT support people saying what an absolute resource hog it is. Users complain their machine is too slow, turn it off and the machine flies again.

Another one which annoyed me recently was the one for tonic water that the voiceover artist pronounced scherweppes. Seems to have been replaced by one with a more normal pronunciation. William Franklyn was the best.

Could I add the Birdseye Singing Veg to the list? You've really got to admire those happy little peas for keeping their spirits up just as they're about to be plunged into boiling water.

This one? Not that bad, surely? ;)

Worst kind of TV adverts can be found on catch-up channels such as More4 - always exactly the same damn ads every time!

Holiday companies advertising foreign holidays when we don't know if we can go or not

The Ryanair “Jab & Go” one earlier in the year was dreadful, I think it got banned?

I am mainly a radio listener but they use the same stuff for both TV and radio. I especially hate the Santander adverts with Ant and Dec, over at the bank of “AntandDec”. Just such an uninteresting and annoying concept!

WeBuyAnyCar has also been a nuisance for years, every advert they have is annoying.

What I find irritating is when a trailer is shown for an upcoming TV programme during a set of adverts, and then before the next programme starts a continuity announcer makes a verbal announcement saying almost exactly the same thing.

Also, plugging programmes on other channels but within a programme, eg a Sky Sports Football commentator trying to promote the latest completely random film which he probably knows nothing about...

This annoys me on Radio 2 as well.

Constant shouty trails for "BBC Sounds", programmes on BBC TV channels as well as other programmes on Radio 2 itself.

And don't even get me started on that silly woman who interjects with "...listen live on the BBC Sounds App...." just after every news bulletin. <( <( <( <( <(

Any adverts for gambling activities, especially during live sports events.
In an ideal world all advertising and sponsorship by gambling companies would be banned.

How about Flash Speedmop. Why is one '2 times as absorbent' rather than 'twice as absorbent'. This seems to be a trend as I've noticed this on other ads. However, of course, we accept 'three times' rather than 'thrice'.

Another one that's starting to annoy is the recent one for Domino's pizza, where the various persons featured in the ad are seen yodelling their orders. :|

I really do wonder if offending the intelligence of the viewers of TV adverts is a deliberate ploy. How many people would be likely to see an ostrich in the aisles of a supermarket, a large snake in a cafeteria and a tiger roaming around a launderette, yet all those three items are shown in the same TV advert with totally unconcerned people in all those three locations.

Incidentally, expensive perfume TV adverts normally only used to appear from November in the run up to Christmas, but here we are in June with a whole plethora of those TV adverts.

There is a radio advert involving a footballer who has scored a hattrick in the European Cup Final being upset that he has missed a promotion for some car manufacturer giving £1000 off some car model.

More annoying because most professional footballers probably wouldn't even bat an eye-lid at saving £1000 for a new car considering that will be a couple hours wage for them

What's with the old lady in the Domino ad there?
Probably a subtle reference to the old joke about how yodelling was invented?

The joke ends with one man yelling to the other across a valley: "...and your little old lady tooooo!!!"

Back at Christmas, I mentioned the "Dreamies" cat treat advert which seemed to take place in a cinematic universe less favourable than our own. the same product has a new advert which announces their support for Pride, which is all well and good...

However this advert is cheaply made, with just text and images on screen while some extremely irritating "jaunty" music plays... still not so bad? Well, there's also lots of samples of meowing being played, which without fail sets my own cat on edge as she thinks there's an intruder that will steal her food!

For some reason I really hate the Giff Gaff advert, with some bloke whittering on in a monotonous voice about his phone deal, while lots of brightly coloured images and words bursting across the screen.

Also, they talk about the Giff Gaff community to help out with any problems, which just suggests "too cheap to provide any sort of customer service" to me.

Just Eat is really annoying when those blinged up gangsta types are singing/rapping, it bears no correlation to me ordering a Greggs in quiet sleepy Staplehurst.

Some of these have been mentioned already...

Just Eat. KFC. Surf. Kazoo. Some of the GoCompare ads. Puzzle-prize ads. Robinsons cordial - the one where the child goes to various places giving out drinks to adults. (Court room, business meeting, etc). EE. That car ad with Phillip Schofield. Broadband ads where "internet" = "wifi". Charity ads which use emotional blackmail to guilt you into a donation, especially around Christmas.

@yorksrob As for GiffGaff, I've been with them for years with no problems at all. I did have to contact them once which I did though a web form. They responded promptly by email and the problem was resolved quickly. I honestly found them SO much easier to deal with than EE's outsourced godawful call centres and know which I'd prefer. (Hint: it's not EE!)

Any old advert that has been crudely updated by adding an extra section on the end. Some household cleaning products have done this recently, to add that they kill Covid as well as the standard “99.9% of germs”.

The aforementioned Parky adverts also do this when their terms have changed. A new, and clearly not Parkinson, voiceover is bodged in at the end. And don’t get me started on the free Parker pen…

On YouTube I am regularly shown adverts for tractor tyres. I have no idea what part of my viewing profile triggers that.

”73% of 87 women agree” Presumably there is some kind of fiddle involved resulting in the bizarre sample sizes.

On the radio, “Everybody’s heard of My Pillow!”. I had never heard of them until they started advertising in every break! I suppose that’s the point but it still seems a bit smug.
