Kashmir is slighly better...

Slightly? It 's bloomin' *miles* better! As is 'Whole Lotta Love'. Stairway, Hotel California and Freebird all bore me to tears.
I prefer stripped-back, no-nonsense rhythm'n'blues (but I also love instrumental R'n'B like Booker T) and garage rock, plus proper surf rock (the best new band around at the moment are Two Wounded Birds).

Are music standards declining? Music standards went into a terminal decline when they invented the microphone. Any sort of recording, transmission or alteration puts something in-between musician and performer (and can make it horribly loud). If a performer does not sound good without a mic, then they really should not be performing. I remember once enduring a whole three hours of some musical or other where the entire cast was wearing headsets and everything was amplified. Having been to an opera in the same theatre a few weeks before, I hated every minute.

In a short word yes. I'm only 16 yet I'm starting to get fed up with music and the likes of Lady GaGa and Rihanna as their music all sounds the same, and everybody raves about them but they really are ****. Also, I don't like it when you start listening to a band and then they have 1 big single, and then the next album and singles that they release are really bad because they want to repeat what they did previously. If I had to describe my music taste honestly, I'd say a bit of everything. I love listening to some old school rock such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath or current heavy bands such as Linkin Park. I love listening to acoustic and indie music such as Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys, (who may I say are very good, and that their new album Suck it and See is very good!) Bloc Party, The Wombats and Vampire Weekend. I'll also admit to listening to a lot of Drum n Bass and Dubstep with Nero, Chase & Status and Pendulum being personal favourites and I think that if these two genre's hadn't enjoyed a revival music would be a lot more boring. A pet hate of mine is when an artist becomes well known such as Ed Sheeran who my friends absolutely rave about, and then it puts you off listening to their music because you don't want to follow the crowd. I enjoy a lot of house music such as Swedish House Mafia and trance like Sander Van Doorn and Ferry Corsten but I don't like the way artists such as David Guetta and Tiesto are just collaborating with pop artists or making remixes of old songs because they've run out of ideas. If you look at David Guetta's old stuff, such as Love is Gone and his first album, it was very very good. And finally I absolutely love Rap, RnB, and Garage. Eminem, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Plan B, Drake, Craig David and Wiz Khalifa all being personal favourites. There is a lot of decent music still to enjoy: you've just got to look past the likes of Lady Gaga and their **** in the charts.

I agree that Suck it and see is good, much better than the previous album.

I also don't much like Stairway to Heaven, don't much like LZ1 and can't stand LZ2 (esp Lemon Song & Moby Dick). But from LZ3 until Presence they were great

Are radio/musi tv standards declining surely?

I watch Top of the Pops 1976 on bbc4 regularly, I suspect the same sh*te-to-good ratio would apply if it were still going today, the only thing is that today it's a bit more shiny in terms of presentation.

The point is, there's a lot of stuff that we'd probably consider good that's not on the radio much, with the internet it's easier to find than it ever has been. I don't really buy the "there's all these classics from the 60/70/80's etc ... " line because for all the classics there's a lot more utter rubbish that's briefly popular and forgotten about.

Or I'm getting older, it was all better in my day, you don't get any free jazz on radio 1 these days ... grr ... ;)

I look at the title of the thread and think of all the great musical composers such as Handl, Verdi, Beethoven, etc, and the works that they produced, as being a progression of musical excellance over a period of hundreds of years.

Then I think of what is loosely referred to as "hip-hop".

Do I think there has been a deterioration in musical standards?.....I most certainly do.

Last night I went to see Voltaire. One man with a powerful voice, dark sense of humor and a guitar. Amazing show and tunes :)

Declining?? Live performance wise, definitely IMHO
Just look at the number of 'veteran' bands' still 'pulling' the punters in, while all these 'middle class 'we're really cool and happening by the way' types seem to last for about 3 years tops, don't start me on 'vocal' bands...glorified karaoke grrrrrr....
proper music should be 'Live' with no gimmics, just 'straight down the line rock n roll'
I thankyou....

No, you're not. Led Zep were ugly pompous, overblown cackbabble. Even the ****ing Beatles were better.

I wouldn't go that far. The best thing Ringo Starr ever did was to narrate Thomas the Tank Engine <D

I think part of the problem is that due to the rise in illegal downloading modern artists are blaming their poorer than expected sales on illegal downloading rather than because they suck.

Certain bands tend to find that they have a loyal fanbase who are willing to pay for their material because they know they can expect a certain quality

Exactly but those artists won't admit the album or what ever sucks though, and just blame everything on piracy or their record labels do that instead.

A lot of the bands i enjoy and love always do release great albums each time they are and all have a very loyal and great fan base to them :)

I think there's still good music being made. It's much rarer for me to take to whole albums by modern bands than some of the oldies. Sigh no More by Mumford and Sons and The Courage of Others by Midlake are noteable exceptions.

Veering way off-topic, but my mate saw Lady Gaga sitting in his local pub, with a pint and fish & chips, before she did the Royal Variety in Blackpool. Bizarre story for you there, but I had to tell it....:lol:

Was she eating them or wearing them?

(only with Lady Gaga would this be a legitimate question!)

Battered haddock dress anyone...? Allegedly, one of the older guys thought she was a drag act, but I don't know if that is true (thinking about it, it probably is).:D:D

No she was having her tea (or dinner if you're southern/an American).;)

As far as I'm concerned, music is all about "my taste, my choice"
I'm 17 and like older stuff like the Beatles, Genesis (inc Gabriel's and Collins' solo stuff), Alex Harvey, The Clash, Sex Pistols, the Jam (i could go on all day). I also like some newer stuff like Bullet for my Valentine, Sonata Arctica (prefer the earlier albums) Muse (again, prefer the earlier stuff), Opeth and Within Temptation
my best friend on the other hand really likes all this modern trash, and we've just had to learn to cope with our differing tastes in music. I can't really understand what she likes about it, but whatever, I suppose she would think the same about what I like.

A music journalist once told me that if you're into music, you'll never just write off a whole genre of music as they all have value.

But that doesn't mean you can't say you don't like something. You just stop short of saying 'all xxxx music is crap'.

I do think that too much music is churned out with no desire to last long term. The labels and artists don't care about the track being played in 10, 20 or 30 years time. It's about short term profit and getting celebrity status in the shortest possible time.

But, while I hate that, if it works because people buy into it then is it actually wrong?

I do worry that the music which deserves to last into 30 years time (and more) has to try and survive through more pap - but then again that may be just me being an old git :)

That has just summed up my attitude towards music perfectly!

You've just got to appreciate that everyone likes something different.
