If my maths are correct, at least 5 150s and 1 158 ended up on the Marches today. The issues have resulted in some of the ex GWR 153s entering service earlier then planned, however they themselves have their own issue which for now heavily restricts the services they can be used on

Is anyone able to say what exactly the problem is?
Is it anything to do with one or two units catching fire recently?

I also saw a 150 running a Cardiff to Holyhead train recently too! (Also not related to TfW but a few single 150s have also been cropping up on Cardiff to Pompey too recently)
I find they're quite often seen on the 0721 Cardiff to Holyhead, and its return working, the 1232 to Maesteg.

A 150 all the way to Carmarthen. I suppose at least it's not a Pacer!

Funnily enough I believe a pacer did make it all the way to Milford Haven on a 175 diagram a few weeks ago. It got swapped for something more suitable at Cardiff however - there are several reasons why you can't run one Cardiff - Manchester. That was on a day of extreme disruption however.

All 175. All South Wales Manchester services are booked 175 Monday - Friday except the. 2017 Cardiff - Manchester.

Not too familiar with how TfW uses their 158s/175s other than 158 have to be used on the ERTMS-fitted line.

Just remembered yesterday morning there was a TFW ( old Arriva livery) class 82 one end with 3 or 4 coaches being headed by 67014.
This train was holding between Longsight depot and Mayfieldbefore Man Picc

Yeah that 67/DVT set (4 x Mark 3 coaches) runs between Crewe/Chester/Manchester/Holyhead/Crewe on weekdays. Has been 67014 for a few weeks now but it does alternate. Has been 013/016/018/020/029 in the past.

Think I read on here that it’ll be stopping at the end of this year to be replaced by a 175 - when TFW get the Mark 4 coaches the 67/DVT sets will just be on Cardiff-Holyhead.

Yesterday I travelled on the 1722 Newport to Milford Haven as far as Neath. Was surprised when a 4 car 158 turned up. They detached the front 2 cars at Cardiff. Surely Cardiff to Swansea is the busy part of the journey especially that time of day. I'd have thought it was more useful to keep it as a 4 car at least to Carmarthen. Assume it was needed in Cardiff if they were short of 175.

Does anyone know the diagram that had the 150 Manchester to Carmarthen? The one I got from Newport (2 x158) would have been the 1431 Manchester-Milford Haven.

basically they need 31 175s but only have all 27 built, so 3 158s and 1 standard-class only 67/Mk3 set per day "act" as 175s. the remaining 21 158s are free for Cambrian stuff and base at Machynlleth. But it's any 3 and any 21 as they swap around. I'm at Carmarthen station and 841 is parked up on platform 2 so is currently one of the 3 basing at Canton.

That's a very helpful explanation, thanks.

I used to think 175s and 158s were used interchangeably.

I would've said all the way from Manchester Piccadilly but apparently they aren't allowed to.

Cardiff perhaps?
oh yes, they're cleared to do Cardiff-Milford Haven if/when necessary :p I recently saw a 3-car 175 and a 153 swap duties at Carmarthen, with the 153 going to "Manchester Piccadilly" (surely a set swap at Cardiff?!) and the 175 going somewhere closer!

Wow, 153 to Manchester - that really would be taking it a bit far! Sounds like a rather bizarre swap to make as well, but I guess they had their reasons.

no worries :) until late 2006 there were 40 158s on ATW (815-854) but then all 27 175s were fully acquired (previously shared with other operators) allowing the 158s to reduce in number to 24 (818-841). I believe Northern and East Midlands have the "ex"-ATW 158s.
