They could well do what has been suggested and run the pacers on doubled up services so they're always attached to a compliant 150 for example. In that case Cardiff Bay would be out
That won't solve the problem of not having enough 150s to run every timetabled service though. They could well do what has been suggested and run the pacers on doubled up services so they're always attached to a compliant 150 for example. In that case Cardiff Bay would be out
There are not many. Cardiff Bay as you say and 3 for Radyr to Corytons. 2 of these 4 jobs will want to remain as 153s I should think.

The 230's should be here soon as well, that will free up a few 150's
Wishful thinking ?
Personally, I'm expecting two, and hoping that three of those fleets will be in service by then. Getting nine 769s in service seems to be like hoping to find snowballs in hell by now. It's one thing for TfW to take delivery of 170s/230s/769s, it's completely another to have enough crew trained on them to get them into service. Look at how long the 37 + Mk2 training has taken - over 4 months so far just for 4 services a day, and it's still ongoing.
Can anyone with certainty say that 12 x 170s, 5 x 230s, 9 x 769s and 3 x Mk 4 sets will all be in full passenger service by January?
230s are a pipe dream.
769s I doubt a full introduction before
January 2020.
And 170s not arriving till end of 2019?
The 37s and indeed atleast some Pacers will still be in service come the new year.
2 x 170s are scheduled to arrive tomorrow. See Post #1930
Ebbw Vale and Cheltanham-Maesteg requires seven units. I'm heard the suggestion that 153s will take over the 150 diagrams in North Wales. Another problem at the moment is the number of 150s covering for 158s and 175s. That's been the case for months and doesn't show any sign of going away. 153s will lose more time Cardiff to Manchester than a 150 because of the narrow doors at the end of the carriages. The 170s going onto Ebbw Vale, Cheltenham and Maesteg will free up both directly and indirectly several 150s. Also, the current rumour is that the 150s currently in the North will be coming down as well, replaced by 153s from the south.
Some Cardiff train crew have already driven 170s albeit only on Canton depot. There used to be at least one XC 170 at Canton every night although I think that's only the case at weekends now. Weekdays they stable in Bristol instead.Hopefully the 170 training wont take too long then.
Well, they have 4 months to do so!
I'm intrigued that you rank them in that order. There are some 230s already in service elsewhere, whereas that isn't the case yet with the 769s. The last I heard was TfW were still saying "September" arrival for both of them, so we'll see what happens.230s are a pipe dream.

While a 153 would be sufficient over the winter for the likes of the Conwy Valley, I don't think many North Wales crew will still be current on them, as they haven't been further north than HoWL diagrams for a few years. And TfW have enough crew training to do as it is...I'm heard the suggestion that 153s will take over the 150 diagrams in North Wales.

Very true. Though those 769s don't seem to have done much since arriving... yet. The wait for the exhaust fix seems to have been as long as a piece of string. On the one hand, yes 230s are in service elsewhere already and 769s aren't. On the other hand, 769s are currently on property, and can be seen any time you pass Canton Depot. The 230s aren't......
I'm going to Cardiff tomorrow and if I have one 170 that has arrived from Norwich to see and capture I'll be excited, and if I have two 170s that have arrived from Norwich to see and capture I'll be even more excitedI understood it to be one to arrive tomorrow and one a week later. But guess we'll see what happens tomorrow.
Class 230's are some months away I'd assume none has yet appeared on mainline yet for testing/training and Class 769's full service unlikely to well into next year yet-this project is so delayed now (Northern should have had it's first in traffic last year) it really needs putting out of its misery...230s are a pipe dream.
