Avantix replacement (previously: Arriva ditch Avantix)

As a user I welcome a new system to replace Avantix, which while OK, does some have some disadvantages.

A few things to note about this new system however:

Being on a phone this means we will have to carry a separate printer and credit card device, unless the two are combined and tickets print on ordinary paper rolls.

If that is then case, them I can foresee problems with SVR and SOR type tickets - how long will a tatty bit of paper remain legible, intact and usable in someone's pocket or wallet?

How will paper tickets work ticket gates?

If they are paper tickets, what security measures will be in place? Many bus companies now print on specially branded security paper rolls with anti tear qualities etc.

If the function exists to print on CCST (which it looks like from the video earlier) then that will be a separate printer etc to carry.

I have heard elsewhere that there may not be a function for excess fares etc - I hope this is not true.

For other TOC's, Tribute has been upgraded with new computers as the HP D530's were too old to run Win7 for their new version.

I assume the rest of LOROL on the West Anglia Inners will switch over to the new FasTIS system soon? Found an old Tribute system with Swecoin at Southbury last week :shock: :roll:

Heathrow Express used to use these too onboard their trains. They have now been abandoned for something that seems to be based on an iPhone with a card reader and battery pack stuck onto it.

Hmm. I guess you can swap the batteries, which is good (especially from a maintenance point of view) but I'm not sure the battery life is that great. Better than the S6 mind.

Printing will become unnecessary, the purchase will be made via the guard's unit then the eticket transferred using NFC to the pax's mobi/smart watch and stored in the ewallet. The barrier will also be contactless and interrogate the ewallet for a valid ticket.

Not really, the S6 is already out and by the time this new solution is implemented and rolled out they will be onto the s7 or even s8.

s5 wont be worth stealing as it wont be worth much.

I wonder if they'll actually be the S5 Active model in the first place? Already in a ruggedised case from the outset and still the same specs (I think, without checking for sure).

The Conductor will inscribe paper tickets from a pad in their finest copperplate...with a quill. And manually encode them with just a magnet! (Okay...I made that up.)

In all seriousness, it's entirely plausible that they could default to e-fulfilment and create an m-ticket that could be transferred to a customer's device, with printed tickets offered as an alternative or for journeys that can't be provided in mobile form (e.g. involving cross-London transfer).

So the perfectly good NFC functionality built into the phone - which with simple software is easily capable of reading ITSO and Oyster - is no good then?

Way to waste money! I also severely dread to think how much they are paying for service plans for what will most likely be obsolete devices by the time they are actually in use.

Android might be a nice flexible system, but after two years of use most Android devices turn to mush under the strain of all the junk data they've built up over time, just like Windows used to do - amusingly Google have now taken the reins on that one while Microsoft have a completely rebuilt kernel that is much better at maintaining performance over time.

Now this I would like to see - at least two of the major mobile operating systems now have secure Wallet systems which are capable of storing travel documents securely, largely independently of any particular application (although I think Apple Passbook may require an app). If Android doesn't have one (I haven't used it in too long) it wouldn't be difficult to create. Utilising these properly would be a very easy way to pass the ticket on. It should be easily possible to store enough data in either an NFC transfer or in a QR code for those who don't have/understand NFC, which could then be deposited into the phones Wallet and recalled as and when required for inspection by the same methods.

No reason why the kit provided can't have a built in NFC antenna connected to the phone. Certainly with my Galaxy S4, the QI Charging back cover I bought has an NFC antenna built in (rather than using the antenna built into the battery normally used when using the standard back cover).

Passbook (soon to be renamed Apple Wallet) can currently store passes, cards and tickets using barcodes and QR codes, and contactless EMV, and with iOS 9 will be able to store other NFC passes.

Yes. The printer is separate, also an android phone now is far more attractive to a thief than a Win Mo PDA ever was.

Also resistive screens are less fragile than capacitive as they can have a perspex layer between the LCD and the touch screen digitiser. Capacitive screens incorporate the digitiser into a piece of glass (hence why smartphone screens break very easily)

Interestingly I have it on good authority that Worldline (aka Atos) are also working on a smartphone based ticketing system for onboard use. Again it would utilise a belt mounted CCST printer.

It appears there could actually be competing products this time.

a replacement is finally on the horizon with GWR and XC known to be replacing theirs

Rumour there will be the ability to sell monthlies and advances

obviously internet connection for cards for online authorization

timetable info up to date with delays and platform numbers

automatic detection of railcard validity, off peak and peak and minimum fares to make the job much easier and ticket swipes
