Leeds to Garsdale has two Return ticket types available :

Anytime Day Return
Anytime Return

Both these two ticket types, always permit Break of Journey on both the outward and return leg, regardless of the journey/flow.

So in short yes you can break your journey on both legs as many times as you want whichever return ticket you choose when travelling from Leeds - Garsdale.

It's only advances and the outward parts of some Off Peak Returns where you can't break your journey and in the case of Off Peak Returns it's mainly to prevent people getting on to intercity trains in the morning peak using break in journey loopholes to get around peak restrictions.

On the national rail website under ticket conditions for 'anytime day return' it said most were valid for break of journey, but that i had to check with them for each journey. I thought this website might be a more accurate place to check :)

It doesn't say that now.

How does that work then? Even if you can't break journey, you are permitted to alight the train at any intermediate stop to change trains, use facilities, etc. You just aren't allowed to leave the station.

It doesn't work particularly effectively.

As an example, a passenger wishing to make this journey on a weekday
0758 Preston - London Euston 1012
1630 London Euston - Preston 1830
is not allowed to use a £70.20 Off-Peak Return because the restriction is
SVR Preston Lancs - London

ARRIVE: LONDON EUSTON Before 0720 or at or after 1129.

DEPART: LONDON EUSTON Between 0926 & 1500 (inc.) and at or after 1845.

Break of Jrny: (OUT) YES (RTN) YES
The cheapest Preston - London Euston walk-on fare available on these trains is the £271 Anytime Return.

The break of journey restriction on a £73.20 Lancaster - London Euston Off-Peak Return is intended to deter a passenger making a Preston - London Euston return journey on the above trains from paying £73.20 instead of £271. The restriction is
SVR Lancaster - London

ARRIVE: LONDON EUSTON At or after 1005.

DEPART: LONDON EUSTON At or after 0905.

No break of journey allowed on outward travel, except to change trains.

Of course it could be argued that if you join at Preston on a Lancaster to London then you are not 'breaking' your journey as you can't break what you haven't yet started.........!

And anyhow the return portion would be valid for the journey from Euston to Preston (get off) because the ticket is valid both on the 1630 from Euston and for break of journey.

Agreed. Hence my first sentence.

Surely you could just argue you caught the 0722 from Lancaster to Preston, and thus you are only changing trains not breaking the journey?
