Steve Robson said:
Birmingham Airport could undergo a heavy metal-style makeover as plans have been aired to rename it after Ozzy Osborne.
The city is considering following in the footsteps of others such as Liverpool and New York and renaming their airport in honour of the Black Sabbath frontman.
Jim Simpson, who discovered the band, said there would be no better Brummie to inspire visitors than Osborne.
'I believe it would be a masterstroke that would instantly confound the cynics.
'How does the Ozzy Osborne International Airport resonate? The message says, 'Hey world, we are proud of our own'.

'Ozzy might not always have been a paragon of virtue, but he is a genuine, flesh and blood Brummie.'
Councillor Philip Parkin told the Birmingham Mail talks have taken place to honour Black Sabbath.
Asked about the suggestion that the airport could be renamed after Ozzy Osborne.
He said: 'It’s an interesting idea and I’ve got an open mind but I think something like that would need to be consulted on fairly widely because it’s a significant part of our infrastructure.
'I would be interested to know what people thought about that as an idea.
'I still feel in general we need to be making the most of the talent we have got and did have in this city and with something like this we have to ask people their opinion.'

So it seems like their boss has proposed this, and it doesn't say how seriously considered these proposals are by the council, and as much as I love Black Sabbath, Ozzy doesn't warrant this - if they do chose the heavy metal genre, both bandmate Tony Iommi and Judas Priest's Walsall-born Rob Halford have done more for music to earn this. I'm doubtful this will ever happen, but if John Lennon got Liverpool then Halford or Iommi should get Birmingham without a minute's consideration in my opinion. Thoughts all?

Nice bit of publicity for the airport. I honestly can't see it getting past the current Solihull Council though.

Wrong time of year for an April fool, surely..... I thought naming Liverpool airport after John Lennon was ridiculous enough - still, I suppose it is in Ozzy's favour that he has never written anything as trite and facile as "Imagine"....

Indeed. I'm sure it's also no coincidence that the airport is advertising itself as an alternative to London airports and iirc there are advanced plans for a third runway.

Can't see it getting off the drawing board.

Osbourne Airport would be the best name. Birmingham Ozzy Osbourne Airport just sounds so much more ridiculous.

You might want to brush up on what makes a Brummie.

Hint: It isn't someone born in Walsall.

I'm well aware of what makes a Brummie ;) However his band Judas Priest, one of the pioneers of heavy metal, were formed in Birmingham, the genre itself was also born in the city and is internationally attributed to it.

That said, as the Airport's in Solihull, perhaps not even Birmingham-born Brummies qualify, only people from Solihull?

I'm sure if they wanted to name the airport after someone famous they could find someone actually born in Birmingham. It's a big enough city and it's been around for a fair while.

Being a pioneer of heavy metal, and having once shopped at the Bull Ring, wouldn't be what most would consider to be worthy credentials when naming an airport.

I at no point endorsed naming it after Halford, just stating I believed that if they had to, there are better candidates from heavy metal than Ozzy, even if one wasn't specifically born in the area, but is generally associated there.

Anyway, looking at Solihull (you know, where the Airport actually is), how about [Richard] Hammond International Airport? :D

I'd have thought Matthew Boulton would be infinitely more worthy of having Birmingham Airport named after him.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Boulton

He already had a college named after him :p
Either on his own or with James Watt (I know he was born in Scotland but his fame lies in Brum). Would enough people, especially foreigners, know of Boulton though?

I still reckon it's a plan to get some more publicity for the airport though, leak it out to the press (data protection means you don't need to ID the claimant) et voila, BHX makes it into the news.

Well, if we are looking for famous Brummies, why not "Nevile Chamberlain Airport"?

All services operated by Bristol Brabazons, I suppose (I've always wondered if Bristol knew from the start that the design could never work, so attached the Brabazon name to a massive failure). No, I think Birmingham Nigel Mansell Airport has a much better ring to it. Moustaches obligatory for all male ground staff.
