Tidy job, I've heard Network Rail were watching this project with interest for their fleet. DVT's are rumoured to be on their way to the test fleet and will need generators fitting.

The Network Rail vehicles will have 60kVA, 400V, three-phase machines fitted.

They seem to have made quite a neat job. Who knows, perhaps this could be extended to other types of stock to obviate* the need for ETS locos, or as a kind of emergency backup for when trains have to diverted away from the wires.

*word of the day

It could. I started talking about this in 2002 and it's come back three or four times since then. We also got into discussions over a similar idea in Ireland on the Enterprise to back up the HEP on the IE201s.

Chiltern were the first to have the balls to take it forward.

What engine do they use in it?

It's a Volvo TAD1352 GE. Straight six, Euro 3A. It's not marine.

Could have had the engines out of our mk3 generator vans, they were all fitted with brand new Cummins LTA 10G3t engines back in 2005, output 202kw at 1500rpm. They made a lovely sound.

Might be a little overpowered for what Chiltern need them for though.

Wouldn't cut it - this machine is 250kWe, 850V DC. You won't hear it though - it's 65dB(A) @ 1 metre.

The intakes on the side are that size for a reason. Just think you have a large V6 marine diesel sitting in an enclosed space with no air flow, but just to make matters worse it's then enclosed in an acoustic casing. So unfortunatly the intakes do have to be that big...

Two things - 1: the Volvo motor moves in excess of 380 cubic metres/minute airflow. 2: more blades costs more money!!

Another Chiltern move yesterday, Wednesday 4th April 2012, to collect another DVT.

67012 ran light engine as 0Z67 (I think) from Wembley LMD via the WCML to Nuneaton, then to Leicester and MML to Brush at Loughborough, I saw it pass Old Linslade at 11:26.

It was due to arrive at Loughborough at around 13:49 and it entered the works area at 14:46. The earlier bright and clear weather had deteriorated into gales with sleet and rain by around 12:00 and it was most unpleasant...

The loco was to collect newly refurbished 82307 (I don't know what its original number was) which now carries Arriva Trains Wales livery. Unfortunately, there were some problems that cropped up which delayed the scheduled departure at 16:00 to return to Wembley and I was too cold and wet to hang around until it did depart. Not sure what time it left, running as 5Z67, but I got a report of it at Northampton at 18:48.

I understand that Chiltern will use the DVT initially, before moving on to a new home...

I don't think this DVT is fitted with a generator and I assume it will eventually become part of the "WAG Express" together with an Arriva 67.

Cheers, Geoff

It hasn't - only no's 1 - 5 will have generators. Arriva did have an option on three vehicles that would have been WSMR but never picked it up.

Just out of interest but why the need for generator vehicles when class 67's are fitted with ETH?

It's for use whilst they're parked up in stations and whilst stabled as I assume it will be more fuel efficient and less noisy than a 67 doing the same job. During service the 67s will still provide ETH.

I took some pictures of 82304 today, both exterior and interior. I will be posting them later when. I get home...

Fuel Tank

Fueltank.jpg

Interesting to note from the photo of the fuel tank is that sanding equipment appears to have been fitted.

Thanks TDK for the confirmation that 82307 has reached Wembley LMD, and thanks to oversteer for the comment on the photo of 67012 at Brush - glad you liked it!

I gather there is a possibility that 82307 may be used in conjunction with a plug-door set for testing purposes when the first set arrives back from Doncaster, whether this is correct or not I don't know as yet.

Cheers, Geoff

Does anyone know what 82/1 82308 was converted from? Wikipedia doesn't seem to know.

82306/7/8 aren't fitted to work with power doors, while 82301/2/3/4/5 are fitted for it, so it is unlikely to be for that.

82306 ex 82144
82307 ex 82131
82308 ex 82108

Thank you very much :)

Talking of DVTs (I know this is off-topic but it doesn't really warrant it's own thread), what is the status of 82101, is it stored or are Virgin still doing something with it (i.e. backup for 82126 etc.)?
Also, has 82115 done anything since it's work with Hull Trains, or is it in store. Seems a shame to just be rotting away in its heritage livery.

Not a "heritage" livery that the mark 3 DVTs ever carried though ;) I don't think that it's up to much these days.

Thanks for that SprinterMan, I did wonder whether that might be the case.

82307 is now on the country end of Chiltern's Banbury set - I gather the train ran ECS on Easter Sunday to Banbury to be in place for this morning's 1H08, 06:53 Banbury to Marylebone, so presumably this was the first run with 82307 in passenger service:

82307 on the rear of 1H08 (67014 leading) departing from Haddenham & Thame Parkway, 07:20, 10th April 2012.

Cheers, Geoff
