Tidy job, I've heard Network Rail were watching this project with interest for their fleet. DVT's are rumoured to be on their way to the test fleet and will need generators fitting.
The Network Rail vehicles will have 60kVA, 400V, three-phase machines fitted.

They seem to have made quite a neat job. Who knows, perhaps this could be extended to other types of stock to obviate* the need for ETS locos, or as a kind of emergency backup for when trains have to diverted away from the wires.

It could. I started talking about this in 2002 and it's come back three or four times since then. We also got into discussions over a similar idea in Ireland on the Enterprise to back up the HEP on the IE201s.
Chiltern were the first to have the balls to take it forward.

What engine do they use in it?
It's a Volvo TAD1352 GE. Straight six, Euro 3A. It's not marine.

Could have had the engines out of our mk3 generator vans, they were all fitted with brand new Cummins LTA 10G3t engines back in 2005, output 202kw at 1500rpm. They made a lovely sound.
Might be a little overpowered for what Chiltern need them for though.
Wouldn't cut it - this machine is 250kWe, 850V DC. You won't hear it though - it's 65dB(A) @ 1 metre.
