Just 150/2s, specifically 150201/203-205/207/211/213. All of the North West area 150/1s, 150133-150, ultimately wore the GMPTE 'Executive' dark grey/red/white scheme in Regional Railways days.
Didnt some of the higher numbered 150/1 go from Provincial / Regional Railways livery, straight to First North Western livery without getting the GMPTE grey, red, white livery. I can remember seeing 133 - 139 in that livery, but 150 147, 148 149, and 150 etc , I can never remember seeing them in the GMPTE livery.

Having had the pleasure of travelling in one of these units the full length of the Cumbrian Coast (Lancaster to Carlisle) my back complained for days after. Actually I eventually transferred to one of the bench seats in the vestibule area which, at least, allowed better views of the coastal scenery and the Isle of Man. These should the first units to go into the crusher!

A 142 is good for a line like that with its unrivalled all-round views - I've done it on one too - but I too chose the side-facing bench seat looking towards the view!

While the random unit generator in practice sent them anywhere and everywhere, there were some in Regional Railways dark blue, light blue and grey, yes - those were the ones intended for use on non-PTE lines like the West Lancashire lines (Blackpool South, Ormskirk and Colne). None survived in Provincial livery.

I think that livery suited them more than anything else ever has.

Now that you mention it I think you're right. After checking I've only got evidence of 150133 - 142 in the GMPTE livery.

I looked thro all of my pics and couldnt find those particular ones. They all seemed to be in the "running man" livery. Apart from 150146, which was in Provincial, with the linking stripes, and the word Turbo on the front, for some bizarre reason.

There was another 142 upgraded with a dot matrix screen before these MerseyRail ones. Can't remember the number but it was in provincial blue which puts it early to mid 90s
142081 received dot matrix external blinds in the 1990’s by either RRNE or Northern Spirit (can’t remember the exact date) but it was a different system to the MPTE units. It lost them when transferred to Wales.

142051-058 along with the aforementioned 150/2’s, 507 & 508’s received the same Regional Railways MPTE livery in the early 90’s (yellow/white with black and grey stripes). The 142’s were ‘refurbished’ after privatisation arrived (well I’m 99% certain of that) and at this time 142041-049 were also done but with an FNW take on the livery omitting the black stripe. 051-058 also received this livery either during or after refurbishment. The additional 142’s replaced the 150’s which went into standard FNW blue/gold livery.

As mentioned, when Northern took on extra 158’s circa 2006 Merseytravel initially paid for the lease on some units to allow 158’s to replace 156’s and transfer them from Neville Hill to Newton Heath then eventually Allerton to take over local services in their area.

When Northern started their 142 refresh and relivery the MPTE 142’s were given the standard livery and blue seat covers and were treated as part of the core fleet although they often escaped to other areas long before this.

When Arriva ran Merseyrail Electrics (Arriva Trains Merseyside) they started to relivery the electrics into a similar if not identical livery to the 142’s omitting the black stripe but I don’t know if all units were altered prior to the full refurbishment was done (once Serco/Ned took over) and the units went into the original Yellow/Silver livery.

Incidentally 150213 didn’t stay in MPTE livery long as it was fairly quickly transferred to Norwich and given standard RR livery.

From what I recall 150133 - 142 received RR GMPTE livery. 150143-145/147-150 were in standard provincial livery (as applied to the 150/2’s as built) and 150146 received full Regional Railways blue livery.

Yep it received full RR livery after this so thanks for confirming it was RRNE that trialled it. It was a poor system which at times was illegible when it bothered to work. I’m not surprised Valley Lines converted it back to a roller blind.

Arriva were planning dot matrix indicators for the 144 refurbishment around 2003 but at the time the weight of such items was too much for the fibreglass destination box and was dropped (not literally). Evidently the TrainFX system is lighter as it was fitted to 144012.

So now you have all flexed your mental prowess at telling us that the 150/1 didnt and what 150/2s did can any of you say why they dropped the white and grey stripes off those 142s?

I remember the 142s not having them, they stood out because of it, it was a stark contrast when I saw then side by side at Hunts Cross station once.
Even the brake vans at Allerton and Ellesmere port wore the stripes so why not the pacers?

I think I pretty much answered it but to make sure, the original livery with black stripe was a Regional Railways livery. When FNW & ATM decided to relivery they simply dropped the black stripe. Most private firms simply wanted to alter old BR derived liveries.

It was just an updated version of the livery which does (did) look a bit cleaner and more modern.

It was actually more to do with the end of Regional Railways days, without wanting to lose a decent brand identity (that had only been around for around 4 years) for Merseytravel.

To me the grey stripe version looked awful. The lack of the black stripe and the paler shade of yellow made the whole thing look faded and sickly. It was even worse on the 507s and 508s when the doors were painted white.

The fact that it also heralds the bad old days of Arriva Trains Merseyside doesn’t help. A wishy washy livery for a wishy washy company.

It wasn't a great TOC, but it wasn't a franchise that was free to do an awful lot of innovation back then, either. It was more like a Council bin emptying service than the other TOCs - here's the money, we're taking the fares, do exactly this. The present TOC is much more of a partnership with room to innovate.

It is worth pointing out that the handful of 150/2s painted into Merseyrail livery around 1993, received grey Ashbourne seats that were removed from 156s. I recall that around this time, 156s were being refurbished, receiving new carpets, new Chapman seating and repaints into RR livery.

150/2s all had Ashbourne seating (same as 156s as built but 3+2, or indeed the same as most of the Mk3-derived EMUs) from new. They didn't come from the 156s - that was all knackered and probably went in the bin.

The only seat re-use of that kind that I know about is the Westcountry 153s that got ex-158 seating, which was awful as it was so low nobody could see out of the (high) windows. Whoever got those next removed it again, though I forget what they put in instead.

The Ashbourne seating that was fitted to the Merseyrail Class 150/2 repaints were mid grey plastic with grey seat covers and red arrows facing downwards on the seat cushions. 156s carried these seats from new, which led me to believe that they were taken from 156s on refurbishment. I have not come across any other rolling stock with mid grey Ashbourne seats. The ones fitted to 150/2s from new were black.

The second picture on this link shows an original interior view of a 156402 with the original Ashbourne grey seats: http://dysgraphyk.madasafish.com/156/class156_interior.htm

The Ashbourne seating that was fitted to the Merseyrail Class 150/2 repaints were lighter grey plastic with grey seat covers and orange or red arrows facing downwards on the seat cushions. 156s carried these seats from new, which lead me to believe that they were taken from 156s on refurbishment. I have not come across any other rolling stock with lighter grey Ashbourne seats. The ones fitted to 150/2s from new were black.

Seems unlikely to me given the state the 156 seats were in when removed - lots of cracks etc. Is it not just that these were newer build 150/2s and so got a newer type of seat from new?

All 150/2s had black Ashbourne seats from new with the horizontal stripes on the seat cushions. They often got broke. Could the grey ones fitted to the Merseyrail Class 150/2 livered units have been surplus new Class 156 seats that had not been used before?

That might be more likely. I do (just about) recall them looking like you describe (red handles too I think?), but I don't recall them being damaged or having holes where the armrest/tray table was, which they would have had if they'd come out of 156s.

The Ashbourne seats originally fitted in the 156s had those black fold down tables, with the hole on the right hand side to take a cup. They always seemed a bit flimsy to me.

The original seat moquette in the 150/2’s was thin red and blue horizontal stripes. The grey with red v moquette was only applied to 155’s and 156’s from new.

So it was the Merseyside Regional Railways livery.
As far as I rememeber the Regional Railways livery was Blue over grey with a light blue stripe
