I suspect things are in a state of flux given there's been a small fleet of 17x's parked at Tyseley every day this week. It's normally about empty during rush hour except for the odd XC unit.
Very little if any spare capacity in the fleet at present. Currently not being helped with still awaiting the arrival of 172001. 006 is in the factory & should be available soon. 172215 & 219 still require new livery but they can’t release them or any of the /3’s to have the interiors done.

Yeah, I was aware it was booked a 172/0, hence my interest in it appearing as a 172/2 yesterday. I'm aware that the existing 172 fleet has had booked work out of New Street for some years, but their diagrams hardly see them there frequently.
Well I’d call every weekend frequent enough. As i said should be a booked 172/2 M to F but is a 170/6 due to complaints forwarded from both traincrew & station staff due to overcrowding on the services booked

Well I’d call every weekend frequent enough.
Units that potter in and out of New Street maybe three times a day, a couple of days per week don't strike me as a frequent sight - It's not something I'd typically expect to see during the short window while I'm waiting for my train, unlike the 170s and 323s that make up the bulk of West Midlands Railway services through New Street.

Thanks for the additional information, much appreciated.

It does seem the new timetable has not helped with capacity. The doubling of services to Shrewsbury appears to have hoovered up all the 170s released from the Chase Line, and some from the Hereford services, which would explain why diagrams are now a mix of 153/170/172s and combinations thereof — my understanding that only Worcester sign 153s which is why the Herefords lost some 170s. We do appear to have lost capacity on a number of services; the majority of workings are now only 2 carriages.

Yes I’ve been hearing loss on the Worcester routes a lot. It’s been a problem for years. 153s can go Shrewsbury as well.

Technically Bletchley,Coventry,New St,Wolves & Shrewsbury still sign 153’s, however they no longer have any booked work with the company deciding to dump them all on Worcester.

I thought it interesting to note that 172/0s and 172/2s are seemingly being used indiscriminately on 172 diagrams out of New Street, as I clocked 172220 leaving New Street on the 16:20 to Great Malvern yesterday. The corridor fitted 172 units are a fairly rare sight at New Street, so it caught my attention.
Theres a diagram for 172/2 on a weekday Hereford turn.

If I’ve followed the diagram correctly it does the 0700,1050,1450,1820 departures from New St.

Currently covered by a 170/6
I’m pleased to hear so; is this likely to be a permanent change given the problems reported by crew? Presumably the unit has been pulled from somewhere else or was simply idle at Tyseley beforehand?

Yes mate, that correct. Suppose the 172/0 will be covered by other types until the full comiment of 172/0s are in service.

Yes

I saw that last night, 172220
That was actually covering the 172/0 turn which started off this morning with 172216 covering it. 172004 is now back on the turn i believe. The booked 172/2 turn is currently a 170/6 which should be working the 14:50 ex New St at present

Early Christmas present. What Worcester did to deserve the sole right to sign them is anyone's guess.

The derailment damage must have been a good one. The rear coach appeared to have at least one totally refurbished bogie which was jet black when I saw it arrive at Tyseley this evening

I decided to take a ride on one of the Class 172/0's on the Nuneaton - Leamington Spa service yesterday whilst her indoors was at work, I did the 18:16 departure from Nuneaton and the 19:02 return from Leamington Spa; 172006 was the unit and I must say they look (and sound) fabulous, lovely air conditioning as well and there was even a good compliment of passengers, it was nice to see a fair few alighting at Kenilworth too (especially from the 19:02 LMS departure). I trust the 172's will be on the NUCKLE for a fair few years to come?

First 172/0 and 172/2 combo I have seen out today on the Snow Hill lines which looked slightly odd! (172004 & 172213).

Afraid I didn't - caught me by surprise as passed it early this morning whilst travelling into Birmingham. It was on an ECS move to Stratford Upon Avon from Tyseley, having reversed up at Snow Hill. Picked up 2J12 from Stratford to Stourbridge Junction.

Interesting you mention 172214. For some reason it's on its way to Ilford right now.

I originally thought they might have been sending one of the 172/0s back!

The pic was taken at Coventry at 0540 this morning

Why would a 172/2 in West Midlands livery be going to London. Is there any maintenance that specifically needs to be carried out at Ilford, rather than Tyseley? Or maybe they have a use for it down there.
