Technically the 175 fleet was never maintained by ATW, or latterly by TFW either. Alstom maintained the sets in the purpose-built facility at Chester and provided the agreed number of operational units each day. This was the depot that was sold to CAF who proceeded to make a pig’s ear of matters resulting in the 175 fleet being withdrawn prematurely.

Yes of course. They were maintained under contract with the relevant train supply provider, for exclusive use by the leaseholder, and it was that which changed.

The pair running to Ely Papworth sidings for storage today has sat down between Peterborough and Ely, several hours delay.

Oh dear! Declared a failure at 14:55, still there at March now, struggling for a rescue engine that can fit an emergency coupling.

I wonder what the Class 175s will make of the Dawlish seawall...

EMR service disruption says a rescue train has been sourced but there is no given time as to when it'll get moving

Does GWR make a net gain of stock with their acquisition of the 175s, or are other units to be moved on/scrapped as part of the cascade?

Net gain.
Only the Castle sets will be lost.

3 castle sets mean there will be a loss of 12 coaches in service a day.
I don’t know the exact numbers of in service units a day for the 175’s but if you assumed that 3 of each type were not used then GWR will gain 55 coaches in service each day.

Thanks. I am wondering if the extra stock will not only relieve the west's issues, but eliminate 2 car workings on the NDL (my line) by sending any stock (back) to Reading.

Looks like (using real time trains) they have a train stuck behind it, should have been in Norwich by 16:20.
Yes - it's looking grim around there at the moment. A Norwich train is shown as 266L (and has been cancelled beyond March anyway)! Many other trains cancelled.

From reading on X apparently the rescue loco arrived and then left without the 175's - they are apparently moving under there own power again!

I thought there was a post upthread which said that Reading would be able to have a diagrammed spare Turbo again, although I can't immediately find it.

Yes, I seem to remember a post like that, but I couldn't find it either and wondered if it was my wishful thinking!

There aren't any booked workings for the 2 cars on the NDL. If they do appear, it will be covering for a 3 car.

Correct, that is the plan!

Will the spare be on the 2 or 3 car diagrams? Having a 3 car spare is great but doesn't really help if the Greenford unit or the Marlow Donkey fails!

Or indeed the Oxfordshire Halts train down the Cotswold Line, which has been cancelled a lot recently…

That is the current timetable. Perhaps Okehampton will be 3-car 175? It's busy at several times of the day and there will be additional traffic at Okehampton Interchange from 2026.

I must say I am struggling to understand how the 175s will free up many 150s, 158s or 165s. If they are to be used on Exeter-Plymouth-Penzance, that will replace the HSTs and several IETs. To my knowledge, there is only one 158 diagram to Penzance. Will the 175s go to St Ives and Falmouth? That would cascade some 150s up towards Exeter which could then replace 165s for use around Bristol and Reading.

175s will also work Barnstaple and Okehampton, this frees 3 x 3-car 158s for Cardiff - Portsmouth and 2 x 150s for Cornwall Metro. Turbos will be released from Cardiff - Portsmouth for additional capacity and services around Bristol.

Thank god less turbos on Pompey-Cardiff for which they are totally unsuitable and awful to travel on. I really feel for Cotswold line passengers that suffered them for so long.

GWR only has 5 x 3car 158s (and I think only one is a true unit, not a 3car with 3cabs reformed from 1.5 x 2car units)

The Cardiff-Portsmouth service has 8 diagrams so not clear how these really help when usually only 3 (or 4) of 8 diagrams are currently formed with 158s. It will still leave a number of workings with suburban turbos rather than medium distance stock. The long journeys to Weymouth are normally the turbos too.
