I had several rides on them last spring which I enjoyed but to be honest they were pretty run down. I don't think any of them had working heaters in the motor cars or the first class areas. Given that last April was one of the coldest on record, that wasn't great. Given that their PRM deadline was the same as the other non PRM units, with hindsight keeping a few 317/6 until May would have been the better option.
Yes they were tatty but those First Class seats were comfort from another era

To be fair, the 317/7s were closer to being PRM compliant than the /6s were, just missing the door button and sound mods - so made sense.

The biggest difference was the universal access toilet. It would have been easy enough to specify that a 317/6 had to be coupled with a compliant unit at all times. There were only five or six non PRM units left by 01/01/21 anyway so it would have been very simple. At least the heaters worked on the 317/6. All water under the bridge now I guess.

True - I always thought the 317/7 lease by GA was a bit pointless, especially as Covid meant that basically no one was travelling on them. Was good to see them in service for one last time though before their withdrawal.

Enough 720s have enabled 10 car operations to start on the WAML, so makes sense.
not really, it is a single 10 car diagram (or even just one up and down service in morning peak 0651 Camb Liv St 0828 Liv St Camb, not sure if it runs as 10 car all day) while the 0647/0717/0747 ex Camb which have been 12 car 379s for 10 years or so are now 5 car 720 and standing from Audley End

0651 and 0717 were 10 car this morning

Personally I can’t see the 317s all going too soon as the platforms at Hertford and Stratford need to be extended apparently.

Mystic Meg predicts that 317341 & 317885 will be on 5G46 tomorrow.

I think they'll all be gone by mid May but who knows.

I didn't think these were route cleared to Newport hence Eastleigh usually for 317's ??

Today's move isn't the first time 317's have been sent to Newport, 317660 and 317668 were sent there back in April last year, not new but unusual. Is there any particular reason why Eastleigh seems to be used more often for scrapping 317's compared to Newport?

I’m not sure but is it possible that the 317s sent to Eastleigh have some useful spares that are salvaged prior to scrapping? They seem to last a lot longer at Eastleigh than the units that are sent to Newport.

They do appear to salvage some parts at Eastleigh, items such as light clusters are removed but I’m not sure about larger components.

Just a thought but are the disposal contracts tendered? That would explain it.

Worth watching 5G44 10+37 Liverpool Street to Cambridge on Monday and Tuesday. Likely that the condemned units will work to Cambridge on this. Assuming two units each day this will leave them with 17 units to cover 12 turns. 317343 hasn't worked since March 1st and 317339 recently came back from Harwich so they are two potential candidates.

Yes I have noticed this since Tuesday just gone diagrams have drastically gone down.
Thursday saw 5 diagrams 10 units out.
Whilst Friday saw 6 diagrams with a 317 vice 720. One 317 pair working a cambridge with the rest 317 pairs on bishops stortford to Stratford and hertford east to London liverpool Street.
Today Saturday it appears only 3 diagrams with only 6 units out on bishops stortford to Stratford.
Time to get those final rides in.
Who knows by mid April 317s could well be very few and far between.
Looking like 16 available units with 4 spare units for up to 6 diagrams now.
With 321340 still at harwich.

Are any units still at Harwich? Also has anyone head any updates regarding the DTSO at EARM or the other carriage at The Depot at Caxton?

There were six pairs out on Thursday although 317348+317507 didn't do much. 317340 is back in service. It came out to play yesterday with 317502.

None that I know of. 317883 is now at Ely, 317340 and 317510 back in service leaving 317339 at Ilford.

I am considering a north London bus trip for a Saturday in June or July, starting from or finishing at Brimsdown in connection with a train to/from Liverpool Street. I may not have long to wait for a 720 at this rate.
