Notwithstanding though, that the loco that hauls the 507s to Newport will very likely run back light diesel to either Derby or Leicester anyway, so could relatively easily run as a class 5 as a class 0 Subject to a bit of planning of course.The issues I see it for moving it directly to Derby are two mainly:
First - a contract has been signed between Merseytravel to ROG to remove the total number of units to Newport - they'd breach the contract if they do not take the right number of units down there.
Second - there is no direct road access to get a unit out of Birkenhead North depot for the haulage company to collect it and take it to Derby. I believe there are gauging issues preventing it being taken by rail.
If we were still with a nationalised railway system then there wouldn't be the issues of contracts and such - it'd just get done i'm sure but i'm afraid with the fragmented part public part privatised system we have at present common sense cannot be applied!
The danger would be 507001 getting too near the mincing machine and being chobbled in error. Wouldn't be the first time a preserved item would be scrapped in error
