Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

It was reported in Modern Railways a few issues back that there were no plans to introduce ABDO until after the whole fleet was well bedded in so hardly significant.

The case for ABDO is surely no longer there anyway given that the previously planned service levels are never going to happen.
What were the previously planned service levels out of interest?

Basically similar to 2016-2018, but with all suburban trains as 10car, rather than some being 8car. Effectively peak hour train every 2-3 minutes inwards from Raynes Park and Putney on each track, including mainline was something like train every 45 seconds into Waterloo

I've been talking to some people and apparently ABDO, one of the star features of the 701, has been scrapped because drivers have refused to accept the PTI risk due to DCO camera quality. Reportedly the sensors haven't been installed either, and the "ABDO Plan" which was in the last business report is down the drain too.

Sorry this just some of the usual rubbish that comes from the rumour mill. ABDO (automatic braking doors open ) is used on the approach to a station. It will automatically stop the train and open the doors in the correct position.

PTI risk and cameras will be relevant on departure from the station so has no connection to ABDO.

I was going to say... what does a DOO camera have to do with an Automatic Braking system...

They have the best front design of all the Aventras IMHO. The 345s are the worst with the "fish" look.

Agreed 100%. I have no idea what those people are looking at when they're saying they're ugly. Probably the same people that think the soulless 700's are beautiful.

Of course, you can’t rival a 442…

At least they made it as far as entering passenger service - twice!
I would think they likely also had newer paint on them when they were scrapped than the 701s will have when they enter service?!

The Reading, Windsor and Hounslow loop tests are also officially being classed as SWR services now (no longer GBRF) - it appears some progress is finally being made.
5Q50/51/52 running today from Eastleigh, are these test runs GBRF or SWR drivers?

5Q50/51/52 are still test runs with GBRF drivers.

Test runs from Clapham Yard are SWR driver instructors teaching SWR drivers and this week are :

5Q30 19+56 Clapham Yard to Waterloo arr 20+11

5Q31 20+37 Waterloo (Windsor Plat 23) to Waterloo (Main Plat 8) arr 22+17.

5Q32 23+44 Waterloo (Main Plat 8) to Waterloo (Main Plat 13) via Hounslow/Kew Bridge/Windsor arr 02+41.

5Q33 02+58 Waterloo (Main Plat 13) to Clapham Yard arr 03+26.

So mainline driver training has started at last.

I await the denial of course. ;)

That is what I was reliablely told by a Driver Instructor a couple of weeks ago.

Last week there were trips between Clapham Yard & Windsor during daylight hours using U.701014.

They're PTI test trips rather than training trips AFAIK.

Cheers!
Out of interest, do you or anybody else know if 513 has ever been out on test/mileage workings since arriving down south from Derby last month?
No knowledge myself and no mention on this thread but they seem to have done some or all of their fault free running before heading into storage

That's what prompted the question to be honest. It was my understanding that the stock being moved to MOD sites was the units that had completed their fault free running and were being moved out to make room for other units to complete said process!

I have done a quick bit of research (and by this I mean I went to Flickr and typed in the number) and found a couple of photos of 513 on test workings in early October so that has answered the question :)

Does this mean that SWR's drivers and/or ASLEF have now accepted the 701 cabs as-is (or with any mod's done to date)? If so, that would presumably mean that only any remaining software problems stand in the way of beginning the commissioning process.

With the 458/4s slowly disappearing, SWR need stock badly. The last minute retention of two 707s seems to suggest a degree of panic either at SWR or DfT.

Have the two 707s now departed for SE?
