Technically it is a brand new train, but in reality is basically same as an 805 and earlier 5car 80x with shorter bodywork.

Its not like it will take much testing to discover if it works with one less window in each carriage side, and different colour paint. Ultimately it has same engine, bogies, braking, and control gear etc.
The 810 has been classed as a brand new product: https://www.railwaygazette.com/uk/d...rs-aurora-a-new-hitachi-product/58240.article . So the whole slate of tests is needed.

Others here have stated the significant design and technical differences between the 810s and 80x; so I won’t cover that ground again.

I wonder it the money saved from ordering bog-standard 802s (9 cars, due to the St Pancras platform length issue) rather than an extensively altered design would have been enough to have ordered a few more trains.

There was never any likelihood that a route which mainly operates 5-car services was going to get a fleet of 9-car trains as the replacement rolling stock.

The 360s taking over Corby services was part of the plan for making good the capacity loss that resulted from withdrawal of HSTs.

Plus the 360 units will also help with the capacity loss of 222001 - 222004 which are 7 car units, when these are withdrawn.

This has been parroted so many times and I can’t help but thinking it’s an overstatement what with three diagrams freed up.

There probably won’t be an enormous loss anyway, due to the inefficient layout of Meridians.

You need 19 sets to cover the 4tph (half hourly Nottingham and Sheffield. So around 23 required to cover maintenance etc.
23 x 9 car would be 207 vehicles, vs 165 vehicles of the 33 x 5 car 810s.

I'd doubt the savings would cover the extra 42 vehicles.

Plus trying to find room at Etches Park. Bad enough at the moment with trains being stabled/stored at Chad or Barrow Hill.

Ah yes, depot space, or rather the lack of.
Not something unique to Etches Park.

Apologies if this has already been stated but what will the First Class/Standard Class split on the 810s be?

Will it be 1 First +4 Standard, 2 First+3 Standard or will one carriage be a Composite as on the Meridians?

How will the Class 360s help? They operate completely different services.

Probably assumes Kettering customers take them instead of Intercity branded services. Not if they’re sensible they don’t.
That may not be the choice of everybody, e.g. the Nottingham xx:05 with a wait of 23mins at Kettering for the trains that left St Pancras just 10 minutes later at xx:15 isn't really worth the disruption. Using the xx:35 Nottingham gives a wait of between 18 and 25 minutes ()and a change of platform involving the footbridge, for the next Nottingam train at the open station. Of course many enthusiasts might choose to wait at Kettering as there will be other trains to entertain them whilst waiting, but I don't think all the general public will think that way once they've been on the 222 or 810 stock just to experience the difference.

But do operate on services that where previously done by 5 car class 222 units.

Depending on how EMR sets up the timetables in the future, passengers may only have the choice of using the class 360 to get to Kettering. Although, I do hope that once the class 810 are in service, there is still some of the services that are a bit more 'Express' that stop at Kettering.

Depends on where you are wanting to travel too, as I state above if you are only intending travelling as far as Kettering, you may not have a choice in the future.

Passengers to/from Corby from/to London, have no (rail) choice with the normal daytime service other than to use a class 360 between Corby and Kettering. So the two ways to travel between Kettering and St Pancras are to stay on the class 360 which takes around 70 minutes for the whole journey. The wait times are biased towards minimising the wait for the Corby to/from the north traffic, whereas the connection to/from Corby to London entails longer waits as there is no absolute need for such changes as the Corby services all go between Kettering and St Pancras with less than 10 minutes travelling time more than the non-stop services. Thus there is a disincentive for passengers to switch to the non-stop services which are likely to be more crowded anyway.
As I said above, I doubt that many are likely to sacrifice their seat, drag themselves over the footbridge and wait on the platform, just for the theoretical benefit of travelling in an 'IC' environment. Add to that the fact that Kettering is no city so even that doesn't really apply.

One of the reasons for EMR Connect as a brand is that passengers are able to connect at Kettering with intercity services to Leicester and Nottingham from the likes of Wellingborough/Bedford etc, that is part of the whole reason the timetable is set up as it is. With respect EMR removing Intercity calls there is nothing but unfounded speculation on your part, there is nothing to suggest they actually would and even if it was an idea it would be utterly stupid.

It's around 15 minutes difference , but still not worth it though.

It would be nice if the Nottingham service stopped a little less - much slower than the comparable service to Derby at 1hr45 to 1hr50.

Let's hope the acceleration of the new units helps push that journey time down a little! That said, the existing trains aren't exactly slouches for Diesels...

Nottingham loads slightly less than Sheffield. At the time the timetable was first developed, EMR said that they could only make it work if both Sheffield services were fast to Leicester, and both Nottingham services did Kettering and Market Harborough.

Not all are slow. The xx05 from st pancras are generally slow and the xx35 are usually fast. The 09.35 from st pancras is 1hr 32 . Also as previously mentioned the trouble with EMR IC services is that they are behind Thameslink , then 360 EMR services. Oop North after Trent they quite often catch a regional or can get held outside Nottingham waiting for one to come out.
