I would imagine the 0449 Shrewsbury to Llandrindod service will be empty most days, likewise for the 0453 Carmarthen to Llandovery
I've had the same train to myself as far as Llandrindod-twice! The last time I used it, I shared it with one other passenger between Craven Arms and Llandrindod.I left Shrewsbury on the first train of the day south to the Heart of Wales Line (to Cardiff Central) and was alone on the train until we arrived at Knighton.
In the early days there was often only staff on it arriving in Inverness. Last time I passed it, there was 2 passengers on it.I've never been on it, but I often wonder about who's going to be on the 0508 Perth-Inverness over the first few stops.
Ask a squirrelIndeed! I was thinking of the old question.
"If a tree falls n the forest and there is no-one there to witness it, does it still make a noise?"
When I did the 0530 to Blaenau a couple of years back, I was the only person on it who wanted to be on it (going to Llanwrst), but there was an extremely disgruntled passenger who was trying to get to Manchester Airport for a flightOccasionally I'm at Llandudno Junction for an early Saurday trip to London. While there are usually a few of us on the 0537 to Crewe I've never seen anyone on the 0530 to Blaenau Ffestiniog which only really runs to form the first service back. It's even quieter at the moment of course, what with there being no trains on the Conwy Valley line.
The latest HoWLTA (users group) newsletter has a report by a passenger using the early service from Llandrindod to Crewe, who said one passenger got off the incoming train at Llan'dod. There were 8 boarding to go north, though the total had gone up to 28 by Shrewsbury.I would imagine the 0449 Shrewsbury to Llandrindod service will be empty most days, likewise for the 0453 Carmarthen to Llandovery
I wonder if this was the only example of a train which was empty in the middle of its journey but not at the start / end.
It goes to Frome now, so the point is moot.

I agree. I must have travelled before they added these new positioning services for the 'commuters'. I remember my train leaving at 0550 ish which is early enough for me (plus driving from Wigan too haha!)
I've used that twice during my travels, just to visit Chathill, meet up with an ex colleague who lives at Alnwick and book into a B&B at Morpeth. The weekday Chathill evening return usually gets a bit of traffic at Alnmouth.
Empty trains on the Esk Valley:
13:50 Danby to Hexham (from Danby to Nunthorpe)
14:57 Hexham to Battersby (from Nunthorpe to Battersby)
17:44 Battersby to Hexham (from Battersby to Gypsy Lane)
There was only one other group (two people) on the 10:57 Hexham to Danby service between Nunthorpe and Danby.
They do in the ones I've seen. This picture is from Kildale and taken yesterday. I have circled the services I mentioned as the reflections make it hard to read.Since they don’t feature in the poster timetables is it any wonder?
The 05:15 Bristol TM-Paddington (via Westbury) is usually empty until Bradford-on-Avon, And has very few pax until at least Westbury. It is unique in not calling at Bath Spa and the 07:48 arrival time into London means there are later trains to Reading and Paddington via Swindon which overtake it. That being said, it gets extremely busy after Hungerford and Newbury, so it is a valuable peak working.
Similarly the 17:06 ex-Paddington usually has very limited pax on after Bedwyn. It used to run to Bristol (via the Hawkridge Curve avoiding Westbury) and on one occasion I was the only passenger on board between Pewsey and Trowbridge, where quite a few people boarded for stations to Bath / Bristol. I wonder if this was the only example of a train which was empty in the middle of its journey but not at the start / end.

Apologies. They didn’t in the May timetableThey do in the ones I've seen. This picture is from Kildale and taken yesterday. I have circled the services I mentioned as the reflections make it hard to read.
At least half of the Pax on that service (and the 1807) alight at Twyford!
