Travelling on a northern rail class 158, there was a brunette sat opposite me. Slim, tall, rather attractive.

Anyway, when she got Off, she intentionally left her ticket at the side of the table. If there'd been a revenue block, she could have had a £80 'penalty'.

Just thought I'd post that this does in fact occur.

I travelled on EMT up to Sheffield recently, and as well as a couple of on board checks, the TM made an announcement reminding people to keep their tickets for inspection at the intermediate stations.

yes it does. When i worked at BDQ If they could not provide or find the tickey they had left we could impose a £80 penalty fare their and then.

Very common occurrence on Northern. Board a stopper between major stations and there is every chance there will discarded tickets on tables/seats throughout the train. Many people buy a single from the guard and then leave the ticket on the train exactly as they would when leaving a bus.

On Merseyrail occasionally the guard will ask if people want to give him/her their tickets for disposal which is a bit silly seeing as there are barriers Hamilton Square and around the loop. Often on a 507/508 there will be loads of day-savers stuffed down the seats.

Are you sure it was the guard rather than some fraudster?

I am surprised that the guard had time to do this considering how frequent the stations are.

Myself and team-mates noticed this with a few guys on a Northern Pacer from Marple during the Greater Manchester Challenge the other week, stuffing their tickets intentionally into a gap by the cycle rack. We had a joke that they were possibly off-duty G4S staff who knew that there was not going to be a block at their destination, but in reality this does seem very commonplace on Northern services with loads of tickets (mostly from Avantix machines) strewn all over the train.

Did you check the back in case she left her phone number? :D

Actually no. But as she didn't respond to my smiles, I knew that on this occasion, the aging lothario in me wasn't working :(

You were obviously supposed to chase after her...!
