Still a waste of time and money whatever effort they went to. They'd have been better getting a Sharpie (other pens are available) and just writing EMR at either end

Unbelievable... All the short-formed services, all the cancellations, and EMR release four units to store. These things can be multied together as far as I'm aware, so why not double them up and have two more sets that can be used to bolster the timetable?
East Midlands Railway have the following statement on their website ‘We must introduce a reduced timetable which will run from Saturday 19th June until further notice. This will allow us to protect key services and routes such as those to Skegness - as well as ensuring we have sufficient capacity across the network. We will still run 85% of our normal timetable, which equates to over 460- trains per day. This reduction will help to reduce short notice cancellations and short forming which we know are immensely frustrating for our customers.’
There must be some good reason why these four 156s are being taken out of service and stored at Barrow Hill. If EMR have made these timetable cuts to avoid short forming and to protect the Skegness service, why can’t these be coupled together and be used on the Skegness route?
They can be used in multiple but only to another 156/9 or 153 due to the GA units having different information systems to the EMT units. There is a question of platform lengths as I don't think every station can take a 4 car unit. Anyway looking at the website earlier there was only 1 short form to Skegness on the Regional routes and no cancelations.

Given the EMR brand will itself be superseded by GBR in 2023, isn't it a bit daft to continue to repaint the 170s now (presuming whatever they arrive in is in good nick)?

They're due a repaint anyway as part of planned maintenance and no one knows for sure that the brand will actually be superceded. They were last painted over 10 years ago.

Didn't I read somewhere that they are now Northern units that were loaned back to EMR, perhaps Northern have decided that they will need them in a few months so need to start the refurbishment process.

Yes and No, GBR will not be a big bang but a gradual introduction. They still need to pass the White Paper through Parliament, recruit staff and then decided which services will be contracted out together. Might be another 5 years before EMR services are retendered (either together or as separate)
I’ll be honest, I thought 274 would’ve ended up as a demonstrator/general loco with Porterbrook seeing as their colours match close to EMRs and it just received a repaint…

In any case Porterbrook’s colour isn’t purple and hasn’t been for some years.
156902 at Wolverton has been renumbered back to 156402 on the system. I suspect that indicates it is going to Northern after it comes out. From memory the 1569xx sets have TrainFX PIS from their Anglia days, which I think is Northern's low budget system of choice - so no need for the 1569xx numbering to distinguish them.

TrainFX is indeed Northern's chosen system (and 'low budget' doesn't even come close to describing how awful it is!)
However, I thought GA fitted the Turbostar-style PIS - not sure who manufactures it - to their 156s. Or did they do some with one and some with the other?

You may be right on the system GA fitted. If so, presumably Northern are modifying them to be compatible with their native fleet, hence renumbering back to 1564xx.

I can confirm that a 222 has had a suspected engine fire causing an evacuation of Leicester station. I cannot find which 222 it was. I think it is quite remarkable that it wasn't a 180.
A fire broke out at Leicester Railway Station sparking huge delays across the train network this evening.
The emergency services were called to the station shortly before 8.30pm tonight (July 15) after reports of a fire on one of the platforms.
Trains between Leicester and Loughborough were delayed for almost 50 minutes but the lines have now reopened in both directions.
It comes as eyewitnesses reported the station had to be evacuated following the incident.
They told LeicestershireLive: "Flames were seen coming from under the train.
"Platforms were evacuated. There were three or four fire engines."
East Midlands Railways confirmed trains are now running but there are some delays.
A spokesman said: "The emergency services are dealing with an incident at Leicester. This is between Market Harborough and Loughborough and is disrupting our trains on the Intercity and Leicester / Nottingham / Lincoln routes.
"The emergency services are on site at Leicester station and have confirmed it is now safe to reopen platform 1 and platform 4 at Leicester station." National Rail Enquiries added: "Lines have now reopened following a fire on a train at Leicester. Trains may be cancelled or delayed as services return to normal. "

"Went up"is rather an exaggeration. Fire brigade report on that says "Upon arrival smoke was reported issuing from train although no flames visible. Incident was confirmed as a small fire located under train, 1 Hose Reel Jet used to extinguish fire."
I'd be amazed if it is anything other than a return to service with EMR, can't see any real need to move back to Etches otherwise. The timing also suggests it (in my humble opinion of course) as it gives them a few days to ready for a return to service on Monday as you say!
Edit: In terms of refurbs at Wolverton, I have no knowledge of that so can't help with that question sorry

100% agree with you there - pretty sure if it was a movement to Northern they would’ve gone to Wolverton first for a refurb. Passenger numbers are also picking up too so makes no sense to release them now with no replacements.
