170273 is now in Full EMR Regional Livery indicating the move is permanent.

Very smart. One of the reply's on the tweet says that all 12 should be with EMR by December as long as the 769's and 230's are in service.

Is it vinyled or painted? I passed it this time last week at Etches and it was still GA white!View attachment 99845
Most likely vinyled if it was still white last week.

IMO I think December’s too optimistic, but we’ll have to see. I’m just hoping they won’t have them all outshopped by the time they transfer!

From what I read on RailGazette, they’re with EMR until the end of the franchise, after which they’ll transfer back to TfW - so makes sense if they’re vinyled. The light clusters and the photo make me think it’s been painted though…

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick- they're to be subleased until the end of their TfW contract, at which point the lease is expected to transfer to EMR permanently.

Ahh ok, thank you for clarifying!

Went to check out 170273 for myself today - just as 43055 speculated, the unit was vinyled so I can imagine it will go for a full repaint at some point. Working the Matlock shuttle if anyone wants to catch it today.

we gonna see any more purple 222s?
You can‘t make a silk purse our of a sow’s ear - with the 222s due to be gone within the next two years I’d hope Abelio concentrates on improving services (returning them to normal) rather than wasting money painting lipstick on a pig.

Its really disappointing to see how slow EMR have been at rebranding compared with other operators

Which would you rather - rebranding or service improvements?

is the question I would usually ask, but in this case they've tried and failed at both...
Thats the issue here. They failed at both meanwhile other operators have managed to do both rebranding and improvements at the same time even if problems still occur along the way.

they aren't as bad as swr however
with SWR, it varies fleet by fleet.
From the EMR side of things, As a company whose brand colour palette is a complete stark contrast to the predecessor its just disappointing more progress hasn’t been made than what we have now.

I find your comments quite amusing really.

In 2007 Central Trains handed back their franchise with the vast majority of East Midlands stations still in Regional Railways colours and with their signage from the early 90s and branded as such. The class 323s dating from the mid 90s were still in their BR livery and the 153s and 150s had only been recently repainted.

In 2012 East Midlands Trains still had Central green class 153s running around. Most of the stations still had the BR era signage they'd inherited from Central Trains and MML, with a few exceptions. The BR stuff was largely left as it happens, the more gaudy Central signage at places like Long Eaton or MML at Chesterfield disappeared more quickly. It was 2014 before most stations were rebranded.

So the previous franchises managed 10 years (without ever getting rebranding really sorted) in the case of Central and 7 years (5 for the trains) in the case of EMT before getting properly sorted out in terms of branding.

Most places have been painted fairly recently by EMT, they're in neutral colours - what is the rush when it's possibly going to change again? The *idea* was meant to be a big bang revolution like Greater Anglia - new trains, rebranded stations etc all happening at the same time and keep the old ticking over until then because it doesn't really matter. Of course COVID and other industry problems have cocked that up.

Unless you're an enthusiast with a branding obsession, not quite 2 years, with a global crisis occupying all but 6 months of that, is irrelevant.

EMR when compared with franchises like WMT who have managed to rebrand almost every train and station within 4 years. It shows it clearly can be done despite the future of rail being unclear and despite the pandemic.

Its just disappointing that EMR havent made more progress than what we have now.

What is the biggest reason that EMR haven't got enough stock to improve services, let me give you a clue WMT still have the 170s they were hoping to introduce. Most of the rolling stock issues are down to other operators. Anglia were late releasing 156s (because their new stock didn't work) - WMR are late releasing the 170s (because their new stock doesn't work). I am sure that some of the things are within EMRs direct management but they are not getting the newer stock they expected and some of the older stock, (156) probably are not as reliable as they could be as they were not expecting them to still be with them now.

WMT's West Midlands rebrand was inevitable - it was a big part of the local authority agenda for multimodal rebranding to happen (rail, bus and tram) and the West Coast side was intended to differentiate between the two halves of the business for longer term strategic reasons.

The two companies aren't comparable. The IC operators usually rely more on their brands and have a smaller number of trains and stations to do - yet most Virgin West Coast stations until fairly recently looked little different to how they were in 1994.

As I said - EMR are running at a perfectly normal speed for this kind of thing.

Personally I'd rather EMR return to a full service than have purple trains first.

It is not like EMR are not on top of rebranding. All the incoming 170's are in the full livery and some of the WMT transfers are in purple ready for when they do come over. The 360's possible referb/branding has started with 360121 away and will hopefully speed up once more units go though the process. With the rest of the fleet which are due to leave soon (once 810's and 170's arrive) over half of the Intercity fleet is purple and a number of 156's are a well.

The 360’s refurb has started - seeing as it’s the first one, will take a while to be done sadly.

156s, 158s rebranding has gone nowhere and the 222s has stalled

To be fair, given the 156s, 158s and 222s are going anyway I really don't think it matters whether they get put into EMR colours or not.

I agree with you because it would be pointless wasting their strained cash supplies on some vinyls that will probably be taken off in the next couple of years.
