Yes high resolution and full colour.
Thanks, so with that in mind, and the software displayed on them being Alstom (ex-Bombardier) developed, can we expect them to be similar in capability to say the 730 screens (albeit obviously with East Midlands Railway's customisations)? And are they a smaller size than those, or the same size?

I haven't got a clue, I didn't have a tape measure, I don't have the exact item specification, and I haven't been on a 730.

Its a screen, very much like all the rest on all other trains.

Sorry if this has been asked before, are the 158s getting a coat of paint, or is this just an internal refurb job?

Surely the Stagecoach liveried ones - aka, pretty much all - will at least get the lazy treatment the two purple doored ones have got then?
But with the "nationalisation" of all the managed contracts see livery variations or a uniform national livery? Time will tell. Do they need painting? I have to say I always think the ex Stagecoach 158s look smart.

Well this is cropping up on just about every thread "Well surely there's no point of X,Y,Z what with Great British Railways," etc, etc. Time "Great British Railways" decided on what is to be the permanent brand then, whether they adopt a national livery or not, before yet more money is wasted.

They may already have decided of course, and it may simply not be public yet, but you get what I'm saying.

And I think the EMT livery is starting to look decidedly worn, but at least the interior remains much smarter than the god-forsaken hand-me-down 170s and 360s. The refurbishment, disgracefully late as it is, can't come soon enough.

I can't say I have had a problem with the 170s. Not been on the 360s.

The 158s are going purple, the Angel Trains ones in particular are coming due for a periodical repaint anyway. Nobody has said otherwise as far as I know, it's been specifically stated that they're going purple internally.

Northern, TPE, South Eastern and LNER are already nationalised. And they don't all have the same livery. I've not heard anywhere outside this forum of any suggestions of a uniform GBR brand identity. We're not going back to rail blue and double arrows. I suspect each existing toc will become a business unit of GBR. Green for Great Western, grey for SWR etc, and to bring this back on topic purple for EMR.

Without straying too far off-topic, I believe the original white paper mentions unified branding for services, and GBRTT does have a few designers on board. That's all I can say for now, although I expect a rebranding to be part of it.

Have you travelled on EMR 170s from all former operators (ex-Transport for Wales 170/2, ex-Southern 170/4 higher numbered, ex-ScotRail 170/4 lower numbered and ex-West Midlands Railway 170/5??

The ex-Transport for Wales ones were supposedly refurbished in 2018 in their late Greater Anglia days, and they seemed alright enough to me when I travelled on them in their TfW days.

I can't speak for the ex-Southern ones as I've not travelled on them, but as I believe they were originally ScotRail ones that had moved to Southern in 2015, I believe they were refurbished then?

The ex-West Midlands Railway ones, which are very familiar to me from that operator, but of which I have travelled on a couple under EMR operation, will definitely benefit from their upcoming refurbishment from a condition point of view - the 25-year old ex-Central Trains interior with 17-year-old ex-London Midland green seat moquette is of course very much showing its age, with very worn seat moquette on the "head" parts of the seats, and very worn carpets, etc. Also, when I was on 170515 recently, two of the tip-up seats by the doors were trimmed in East Midlands Trains orange/red moquette, and the big toilet control unit cupboard was unlocked open.

I was amused though that EMR have got the 170/5s to talk! After WMR not letting Julie Berry speak on them for years (for some reason, even though it was possible and she does on the 172s and now the 196s). I wonder if the same announcements are being put on the new EMR 170 passenger information system? They seem to be recent-ish recordings, as she says East Midlands Railway.

I've heard that the ex-ScotRail ones still have their original interiors - does anyone here know if that's true? If so, they must surely have the worst interior condition of all of EMR's 170s?

Maybe not the original ones with respect to ScotRail but certainly a mid 2000s recover. I remember the getting a fresh in the mid 2000s before the “saltaire” covers. Which is why they never received them. They are very tatty. Still had lots of ScotRail stickers above the doors when I was on one in the summer. The ex-Anglia and southern ones are in the best condition in my opinion.

The scotrail ones are in the worst condition, they are horrible. I like the TfW ones, the WMR ones are bearable but the Scotrail & Southern ones are uncomfortable.

They’re all bad for different things.

The LM ones just have a ridiculously off brand and jarring bright green interior.

The TfW ones are missing random armrests, pull down trays AND full sized tables!

And the ScotRail ones, while the purple fits, just look the mouldiest, most dated Turbostars I’ve ever seen.

I’d probably take a former 171 over the others.

The full size tables are unfortunately large mouldings or whatever you call them that are a one piece item - when people insist on sitting on the edge of them they eventually break in half and have to be removed. I don't think they have any more of the 170 tables in stock as they're being replaced so they stick in 158 tables if possible.

It's crazy to think that the ex London Midland/WMR ones have barely been touched inside since Central days! Aside from seat covers and carpets and a green band across the window top, they are essentially as built, 24 years ago.

I guess it is all relative. I know I have been on some 3 cars and most certainly the ex WM units. Let me say they seem luxury. But then I spent years commuting on EMT Class 153s.

Now do we know if the system will be staying Bombardier BTROS, or moving over to a new system like Televic or AlmavivA Moova?

I really think wait and see is going to be the best answer here. It won’t be long before the first one is out and then we’ll find out.

Unfortunately unless you have a particularly detailed interest in passenger information systems which I accept is a niche interest for some folk then I'm afraid that even the people with the information are unlikely to have the foggiest idea of what you're talking about.

I know what the first one is, but I haven't a clue about the second and third. I would reason that it is likely to be an upgraded version of the BTROS but not being particularly bothered beyond whether it works when I try and use it I couldn't swear to it.

There should be an EMR or XC unit floating about soon enough for you to see anyway.

Ah yes. 158847 apparently followed by 856 after collision damage.
856 was the unit that also received major collision repairs after hitting a bridge at Barrow Upon Soar, I believe*. At the time of the incident, it was in Central Trains livery, when it returned to service, it had been refurbished in East Midlands Trains style. It seems this unit has a mishap every time it wants a makeover.

BTROS.

So when is the first 158 due back from refurbishment?
End of January but as the wheelsets for 158s were made in Mariupol and that supply chain is somewhat broken, and it has scrap wheelsets, it might not be out immediately upon return.
