156s looked quite good in the RR Express livery designed for the 158s that Central put them into.
I never felt that livery worked on the 156s that had it applied - they didn't look anywhere near as sleek as the 158s.

I agree that the Regional Railways Centro scheme was nice, though.

New MML? I think it looks terrible. If the window band had been the full height of the windows it might have looked OK, though.

I was mostly talking about the power car.

Here's something back from the inauspicious times of Arriva Trains Merseyside.

Loadhaul Black & Orange on a 37 or 56, Mainline Freight Blue on 37s, 68s in Scottish Saltire livery, FTPE and other First Group liveries.

All great choices.

Not sure if WY Metro's been mentioned yet, but great livery on the 158s.

Which one? I think one was mentioned on the first page, but that could have been the 'bad Liveries' thread...

This one just came to mind...

The first two SWT Class 455s (455711 & 455904) that emerged from refurbishment had black cab window surrounds, later replaced by the extended blue swoop:

Personally, I prefer this earlier version....

Someone mocked up a similar idea with the HST powercar in GWR green and then from the rear window, into BR Chocolate & Cream livery to resember loco & coaches... looked quite classy imho!

EDIT found the link:

The same person also did a 153 in GWR 'Brown & Cream' livery, similar to the one the GWR railcars carried (albeit with a yellow front end):

Suits the 153's boxy nature, I have to say....

Personally I think trains look better if the locomotive (and I'd include HST power cars in that) are to a certain degree different from the coaches. BR blue managed this by having the locos in overall blue with coaches in blue/grey. NSE never looked right on LHCS due to the same livery continuing along the whole consist, especially the revised version where the stripes didn't angle up at the cab ends. Likewise intercity liveried coaches looked better when hauled by a loco in large logo blue. The 'Ficticious Liveries' example of the GWR HST with chocolate and cream at the rear of the PC shows this well.

One of the things about old liveries is that they won't comply with today's standards for accessibility, with doors not clearly marked...

It'd be nice if a few HST sets could be painted in historical liveries to mark their retirement from Great Western services, but I'm not sure how they could be made compliant without spoiling the look.

I think the liveries should follow the features of the body of the vehicle. That would mean mainly straight lines. I don't like swoops and bumps that conflict with the vehicle's own body lines, and odd blobs of various shapes stuck onto the side with no evident logic.

Silverlink and EMT liveries include unnecessary bumps on the lower sides. Most Northern liveries look a mess, though the one on the 319s isn't so bad because the wavy lines have been kept under control.

If you have it available, there's a picture of VTEC's new livery on page 8 of the April issue of Modern Railways. I spent some time wondering about the large slanting coloured bit on the first Mark 4 coach, till I realised it's actually the shadow cast by the adjacent footbridge.

I think the WAGN livery on post 4 looks good. The curved line is controlled and the big contrast between the colours gives it a kind of strength.

If I was running a TOC, I would not be a customer of Ray Stenning's company.

I think what he's doing is getting tired and samey. It was good for many years (the modern Stagecoach livery IMO being one of his finest) but now it's getting a bit tedious. The new East Coast livery is IMO particularly ugly and unfinished-looking, but everything else these days seems to look like it's owned by Trent Barton or Southern Vectis.

Thanks! :D

Any opinions about the liveries?

My personal fave out of that lot is the Intercity Swallow Voyager.

Kinda surprised that this one hasn't popped up yet (if it has, disregard this post):

(not my photo)

The 59/2 subclass in their original National Power livery. Hard to keep clean, but very striking & impressive when it was. Much, much better than the drab EWS livery that replaced it....

One would have thought that the bright yellow lights would give enough visibility to the location of the doors.

Chiltern get away with one of their MkIII sets being in blue and grey so I'm sure it can be done on an HST too.

You'd think so, but apparently not... Then again, if I was trapped in a derailed coach, I'd hope any rescuers could gain access to help me sooner rather than later! This is of course another reason that doors are supposed to be clearly marked, AIUI.

I think that if I was in a derailed carriage and the emergency services were unable to locate the door, I'd be very concerned indeed.
