Between Taunton and Bristol T.M. the line does have some good views of the countryside
Don’t know about now, but before the announcement of these being withdrawn, it was not difficult to see an up 2+4 passing a down 2+4 at some of the stations on this line.
Until recently the line offered brilliant views of the "sea" (although not as good as the views offered between Castle Cary and Taunton).

GW16 has seen use today after replacing GW14 that failed at Bristol Temple Meads. 43005 is still in the set with 43010 and will work 1513 Taunton to Cardiff and 1800 Cardiff to Penzance today.

Can confirm 005 was leading the 1900 Cardiff to Plymouth as it headed down south of Bristol. Too dark for a decent photo unfortunately.

With 005 now gone does anyone know the next powercar to go?
The next 2 due exam are 43088 & 43158, depending on how well there hours are managed would expect them to go sometime in the 2nd half of March

Been told the exam dates are more final then the engine overhaul dates which they seam happy to run locos past,

Also worth noting that 3 castles are yet to work a train this year 43162, 43171 & 43186

Apologies if I’ve missed them but are the current standard Saturday diagrams for the castles anywhere…?

Apologies if this has already been asked (or posted), but do we know exactly what diagrams the Castles will work after May and September? If diagrams from May especially are known at present that would be a big help with me planning a trip to the south to catch them in August. Thanks in advance!

Any idea if this service on a Sunday is normally a castle set?
I’ve taken this before and it was a Castle. Something quite satisfying alighting at the rather vintage Worcester Shrub Hill from an HST!

It can be – but it’s not guaranteed. The past four weeks have seen:

12/02: 43042 + 43009
19/02: 165135 (to Gloucester)
26/02: 165132 + 165133
05/03: 43009 + 43027

Isn't there just? From 2008. This was my return journey after having just been accepted into the Guild of Railway Artists!

The half hourly service with IETs on PNZ CDF etc should be retained, Extra sidings going in at Longrock to cater for this longer train upgrade.

Penzance Cardiff is 2 hourly and as far as I'm aware is staying as it is.

Also worth noting that 3 castles are yet to work a train this year 43162, 43171 & 43186

Worth noting that 43162 has been out recently, seen working 2C10 (0628 Exeter to Penzance) last Saturday (11th) at Liskeard. Not sure if 171 is on an exam or not, but noted upthread that 186 is on exam.

43186 was out on a test run today so suspect it'll be back in service very soon

Not sure if this is the case (just my guess) but that might mean another power car withdrawal will happen soon. I went through my photos from January this year, and the power car returns and withdrawals seemed to be:

43192 returned & 43022 out
43094 returned & 43160 out
43098 returned & 43005 out

Up to now each withdrawal is accompanied by the return of a power car around the same time. Now that 43162 is back and 43186 might be back shortly, I would suspect the withdrawals of potentially two power cars, maybe 43088 & 43158 as mentioned earlier in this thread. If I recall correctly they were working together on a Castle set around two weeks ago but haven't been back recently?

Do correct me if I'm wrong as I don't know much about their examination details and service status, these are just based on my photo records.

Took advantage on Friday of the revised castle diagrams due to nothing going past Plymouth to cover the evening Taunton Cardiff's that stop at Lawrence Hill and Stapleton road that are normally IET, the 1711 Taunton Cardiff and 2000 Cardiff Taunton, thought I would never be getting on a HST in the evening at Lawrence Hill again, the bonus being 43158 was on this normally IET diagram,
Also tonight the 1800 Cardiff Plymouth was terminated at Bristol temple meads so it could become the 1908 to Gloucester after the set that should have been on that train failed before leaving Plymouth , so some interesting things to do

I’m hearing rumours about the Castles lasting until May 24 now, any truth in this madness?
