Despite using it daily, I won't appear in that figure because my annual season ticket is issued to/from Seaford as the price is exactly the same.

Hitchin: 2,580,000
Stevenage (used more because expresses stop there): 4,258,000
Letchworth: 1,451,000
Baldock (I use it a lot, more convenient when going to Cambridge): 475,000

An interesting breakdown of figures. Stevenage isn't all that much bigger than Hitchin, but gets double the number of passengers because of the expresses. Baldock isn't all that small, but perhaps has fewer commuters and fewer people from outlying areas because of poor bus links.

I don't know about that. According to Wikipedia, Stevenage has a population of 80,000, whereas Hitchin has a population of 30,360. That's quite a difference. The expresses do make some difference, undoubtedly, but not that much.

Stevenage: 4,258,000
Benfleet (for when I go home): 3,002,000

Begs the question as to which stations have the highest population to usage ratio? I'll give you a minimum population figure of 1000 to stop some clever so-and-so bringing out Sellafield or some such example!

I'll start you off - Kendal Oxenholme ward has 2206 people; Oxenholme Lake District got 0.418 million passengers in 08/09: that's a ratio of 189.483228:1

Things that would do well with that would be:
- tourist destinations
- places where lots of people go to work (how many people live in the vicinity of London Waterloo?)
- possibly junctions for much larger towns connecting to the main lines

For one that isnt any of those things, Taplow does pretty well with slightly over 123 passengers per person.

Brockenhurst pop; 3,450 station footfall; 1.244m

The college, Lymington links, tourism and crosscountry calling all play there part.

Alnmouth has 197222 passengers but only 562 population which is 350.93
Yes that's too low a population but even if the population rose to 1000 without a single extra person using the railway station it would still have a higher figure than Oxenholme so I think it should count :p

edit: that still doesnt beat Brockenhurst... wow...

Kemble has 309,628 entries and exits for 8'09, which appears to be up on the previous year by over 20000. Not bad for an ex junction station which sits almost in the middle of nowhere that has been half singled.

Strangely Stonehouse at 108,808 seems to average almost as many as Stroud, despite being a far smaller station that BR wanted to shut.

Shenfield
population 5144
station usage 3,008,422

ratio 584.84

I think that will be the best in all qualifying stations outside Greater London :p

My home station of Redditch has total usage of 840,000 - population is around 70,000 but a bit of rural custom must come from the outlying areas with no trains, like ****enham, Astwood Bank and Studley (the last two used to have stations on the Redditch-Evesham line).

Cherry Tree - 25,000 apx.

On the subject of station passsenger figures, which station has the most passengers and is unstaffed, and which has the least and is staffed?

Thinks Carstairs gets the second question - 14,000 users last year, and staffed about 42 hours a week!

Aylesbury Vale Parkway: 13,058 for 2008/09.

This looks pretty dismal, but bear in mind it only opened in December 2008.
The first buildings of the Berryfields development have started rising from the ground in the past few weeks so AVP is set to get a lot busier from here on in.
