Don't wish to sound like I'm moaning, as GWR obviously had no obligation to relivery any power cars, but 185 looks like it's missing something to me without a number below the windscreen.

43185 never carried a number below the windscreen though, did it? And wasn't numbers under the windscreen an 'Executive' thing and not 'Swallow' anyway?

It was an Eastern Region thing. Power cars in swallow did have front end numbers, but as you say 43185 was not one of them.

It was timed so that 43002 and 43185 were next to each other at Paddington this morning. Unfortunately I've not seen any photos yet but imagine they will exist?

All three sets there deliberately lined up for an event hosted by GWR MD Mark Hopwood as it is 40 years ago today that the 125mph service started.

Happy birthday HST!

Have to say that ALL the HST operators have done a great job in supporting the 40 years events.

Were those two liveries ever concurrent? Wouldn't surprise me if they were, but there was the "Executive" livery in-between.

That is a good point actually. I went to see it go through Exeter earlier, looked nice. I remember 'executive' coming out in the 80s and I remember the last coaching set in blue and grey I think around 1988 but not sure. I think you might well be right that these two liveries wouldn't have been seen together.
Anyone?

The overlap must be very, very close, in terms of some BR Blue powercars remaining as Swallow appeared, I assume they didn't manage to repaint them all in Exectutive.

The closest I've found so far is a BR Blue powercar at Leeds on July 26th 1987, and a Swallow one at York on September 12th.

That's a good bit of digging. :)

As an aside I noticed when they were crew training with the 73s in the West Highlands recently that there was an Intercity liveried mk2 in the consist which I assume (maybe wrongly, I don't know) has retained the livery since BR days and is still on the network and that the livery can be traced back to around 1980 when the APT-P came out, that that is one very long lived colour scheme!

Ah, that will explain the 125 Group people on platform 1 around 1130 this morning. What a shame I never saw any 'non-FGW' HSTs today!

The intercity swallow livery is just so great.. so good to see it again!

Not the best photo in the world, but the first photo I've ever managed to download onto here :).

Just to clarify for those that don't know any different: while this week certainly marks the 40th anniversary of the introduction of accelerated timetables operated by HSTs the first diagrammed operation on passenger services happened in July 1976. Today it would be called a soft launch. It was quite exciting to see these "streamliners" mixing in with the remaining Westerns and decidedly ropey ex-LMR 50s. It also spurred many drivers of loco-hauled services to seriously push it and it became a regular thing for down trains to wait more time than normal at Reading thanks to early arrivals. Quite sobering to think that the standard accelerated time for Paddington to Reading start-to-stop was just 22 minutes, even the loco-hauleds were often allowed just 29 minutes. Compare that to today's timetable: such is progress!

Can anybody help me with where 43185 and 002 are today please?

002 is on the First Class end of set OC47, which is today's Old Oak standby having stabled overnight at Worcester and worked 1L28 0707 Worcester SH - Paddington via Swindon. As diagrammed the standby works the 1800 Bristol and 2030 return, but as the standby set it could be stepped up onto any of the evening peak Old Oak departures, or brought off the Oak additionally to replace a failure/severe late runner.

185 is on the First Class end of set OC31 today working 31 diagram - Empties off the marsh for 1G02 0640 Swindon - Cheltenham, 1L36 0831 Cheltenham to Paddington, 1B27 1115 Paddington to Swansea, 1L82 1528 Swansea to Paddington, 1C28 1930 Paddington - Weston and empties back to SPM

I believe they have in the last day or two been moved onto a green rake of coaches.

I see this colourful combo yesterday on the B&H. From the above post it was working 1A85 with the B/G power car leading.

I spotted it again yesterday as well, leaving Reading approx 1325 heading for Paddington.
That would have been the 1A81 Penzance - Paddington.

The set ended up at Laira yesterday evening. Not sure if it made it out in the same formation, however! (i.e. power cars may have been changed).
