43002 is going with 43185. Sir Kenneth will be present himself as well to see his namesake.

I appreciate the effort and the gesture that has gone into this, and it's essentially nitpicking, but they haven't done a very good job of aligning the red and white stripes between the cab and the bodyside behind the cab door! BR never seemed to have such issues. ;) Other than that it is great to see Intercity swallow livery on an HST power car again. :)

And to think he crashed overnight in Tamworth just to nab this shot!

I noticed that too. Thought it looked odd. Im guessing its a vinyl job as opposed to using a paintbrush as it looks as tho that side panel has been applied too high.

Still, with this and 50 031 its nice to see the intercity colours out once again. How about some nice coaching stock to match.....

I assume so: It would also explain the wobbly upper edge to the white stripe around the cab front, akin to a Honrby model that's been badly tampo printed.

Looks like the issue is the red stripe along the body side isn't thick enough, the red around the cab looks about the right size.

Other way round to my eyes: bodyside looks correct, but the stripes look too thick on the cab.

Looking at a few more pictures of it in Daylight, I think it's a bit 50/50. The Cab stripe is too think but the right shade of red, the bodyside is about the right thickness but too pinky - Which makes me think it is a Vinyl job too. There's something about the upper shade of grey as well that's bugging me.

Not a bad effort, but my problem with vinyl is it can give more of a matt effect than a nice shiny glossy coat of paint can and will. 002 can show this up from a few different angles & light.

Despite the minor niggles we mustn't forget that GWR didn't have to do any of this, realistically just for us few enthusiasts so thanks to them for bringing both back for a last hurrah!

Indeed, having enjoyed FGW's HST's this past week, I think it's wonderful that they're recognising the vital part that these trains have made to the Nation over the past forty years (written sat on a 125 at speed :))

What number is the 57?

If the gods of wibble have predicted correctly, GWR have bought one of the 57/3s from DRS (I think it's 306, unless someone with better knowledge tells me different). AFAIK, there's no plans to repaint it or any other 57 in Western Desert Sand/Ochre (google western enterprise ochre for an idea of what it'd look like colourwise); it's just summat we'd like to see happen without shoehorning GWR into doing it.

57303 and 57306 Are now leased to GWR from Porterbrook.

I do believe that co-tr-paul was being humorous!

(Sorry if you realised this, it's a limitation of the written word)

Agreed!

Most definitely is vinyl yes, but full credit to GWR for doing this. Cant wait to drive the beast now! Long live swallow !<D

Agreed!

I don't quite know what the current position is with 57303. It had been on lease to GWR from DRS for about 2 years but returned to DRS about 2 months ago in exchange for 57306. It has been used on Flask trains.

DRS ended their lease/ownership of both, porterbrook took them over, they are now on long term lease to GWR like the four 57/6s which are also owned by Porterbrook

AFAIAA DRS leased them from Porterbrook. So this would seem to be a change of lease, not a change of ownership, despite what has been posted as "fact".

Anyway, back on topic
Do we think this is the final retro livery?
I think VTEC may be inspired by the way which it has been recognised. One from them maybe?
It's also worth noting that other TOCs power cars have begun to see HST 40yr plaques.
This leaves the following in some form of recognition;
43002(GWR) 43185 (GWR) 43321(XC) 43423 (GC)
Thanks,
Ross

It has been suggested that GWR are looking at a "Merlin" liveried heritage repaint: appropriate, as it is 20 years ago (today!) that this livery made its debut.

As for other TOCs, this might offer a clue: http://www.125group.org.uk/celebrating-40-years-of-125mph-operation/

Keep your eyes open!

If you like the HST 40 plates, you can get a pin badge version here: http://www.125group.org.uk/product-category/hst40/

57303 is very much still on lease to DRS.
GWR have taken on another hire of a DRS 57/3 to cover the movements of 387s between London North Pole and Reading Traincare depots. This results in the hire of two DRS 57s to GWR. Returning to one once Airport Junction to Reading is electrified by December 2017. (Maidenhead by May 2017 - both dates expected ahead of plan)
57303 is not able to do this, as it is fitted with a tightlock? coupler.
The 57/3s are on a buy out lease with Porterbrook, a little like a repayment mortgage. Similar to what happened with the 57/0s.

Suitable dellner coupler 57/3s (ie at emu height rather than 390/221/220 height) are: 305, 306, 310, 312

That hst looks superb! I couldn't care less if the stripes are exactly right- it looks a good approximation to me and a nice gesture by gwr
