I'm only 20, and I simultaneously feel like a geriatric and an ignoramous, due to the knowledge many of the younger members have!
Someone on this thread's mentioned a Portsmouth - Penzance service (which was run by Wessex Trains until FGW took over in 2006 AFAIK).
(I also want my 200th post, which I will have achieved by the time you read this :P )
Edit: Was my 201st, wonder what my 200th was :/
That was a different service that I believe existed as a legacy of the plan for Wessex to take of the Waterloo to Exeter service. In the end this plan was scrapped and Wessex merged into the Greater Western franchise. The Penzance to Portsmouth service was started by Wales & West and ran via Westbury. There was a time when both services were running. When it last ran in Dec 2007 it seems to have been an SWT service, but with an FGW traincrew taking over somewhere (beyond Exeter or Plymouth maybe?). Down service on Saturday with portions from Portsmouth and Waterloo joining at Salisbury, and Up on Sunday, with Penzance and Paignton portions joining at Exeter, and splitting at Salisbury for Waterloo and Portsmouth.
I'm Jim Kettle, i'm 14 and im from Salisbury, and theres a few things I would like to shout out to Britain's Rail Network!!!!
-Firstly, I want FGW to oporate a houl;y service to Brighton, Not 1/2 times daily!
-I want XC to make their Paignton runs at least hourly, like VT did before they passed the franchise over to Arriva back in the old days!!!
-SWT to bring back their Brighton service.
-SWT to bring back their West of Exeter service
-ATW to bring back their Manchester-Waterloo service
-Bring Barleston station back!
-Give Three Oaks, Doleham & Winchelsea back it's hourly service!!!
-LM to Bring back their Gloucester-Worcester shuttle!!!
-FGW to bring back their 158s on the Devon Metro
So, any comments, questions, points of veiws, etc?
Thanks,
Jim.
FGW shouldn't run to Brighton at all - the stock would be much better used to augment services in the Bristol area, or on the Portsmouth to Cardiff route. SN now provide a perfectly adequate hourly Southampton to Brighton service, and when the weekday FGW eastbound service runs it is in the path of the SN service, which follows behind and is wasteful duplication.
There's no point in SWT trying to run to Brighton either, because the aforementioned SN service is more useful. SWT use the units that formerly ran to Brighton elsewhere now, strengthening their routes into Waterloo.
Most importantly though, TOCs run services that are specified by the DfT - you write as though all these changes are at the whim of the TOC - but they aren't, they go where they are told.
