Good morning all! First post here so be gentle : )
Question(s): It looks like I got through the initial stage of Apprentice Train Driver LNER King's Cross and submitted my video interview. In th meantime I've been shortlisted by another Train Operating Company. The other TOC's assessment is structured differently with the first stage being: Stage one of OPC testing in Watford.

1.If I passed the OPC there - would I later have to do it again with the other TOC if selected?
2. Would that have any negative effects on selection, i.e. telling the other company I'd already passed. Basically I'm trying to decide whether to keep two separate applications going simultaneously.

I'd really welcome any insights or opinion. All the best.

You can have 2 applications but be aware if you failed any of the tests that would rule you out the other job as there's a 6 month wait to redo them.
If you pass them then it can help as you can skip that process with the the other toc if need be and they don't require any additional tests.
Obviously if you pass them with one toc you'll probably go forward in the process with that toc and then you'd likely need to decide who to continue an application with .

Hi after the VR1 assessment for LNER

Did you receive an email immediately stating if you were successful or not?

Nope, you will know you're successful from what I know by receiving an invite to add your GCSE grades. Add those and then it's a video interview.

It's usually an SJT followed by Error checking and then lastly the Verbal Reasoning test. Pass all of those and you'll need to put in your GCSE result certificates or statement(Must show you've achieve a C in Maths and English or equivalent) before a video interview.
Can you please help by explaining how does the error checking looks like or what to expect... also verbal reasoning is it like general knowledge based on maths and English?

If you've passed the error checking then its instant.

Error checking its just comparing an item from a list to the requested order, looking for errors in any of the specfic data columns and verbal reasoning is purely based on paragraphs in which it asks 4 statements about the text, that you answer either True, false or cannot tell.

No it doesn’t, the MMI is stage 2 which you’re well away from. It’s just a general video sift for that toc.

Hello everybody, I have completed the video interview and wish everybody else the best of luck to. I was just wondering if anybody knows what the next stage is if we pass the video interview? Is it an in person interview and where will that take place? Many thanks in advance!

Does anybody know the T&Cs for Newcastle? Standard day just a King’s Cross and back for new starters? Shortest/longest shift? What increments does the pay go up? If the training course is in York would it be staying in a hotel there or travelling down everyday? Thanks

There will be a driver manager interview at the LNER offices at Kings Cross.

Made it to the video interview but I've been at this stage before and failed so I'm not expecting to go further. I used the STAR method this time rather than gibbering on.

Either way I hope you guys are successful.

Hi Hedgerow,
Could you kindly help me by explaining on what to expect on the video interview please. I have passed both stages and submitted my certificates but now I am not sure what to expect or what kind of questions they might ask on the interview. Would you care to explain how it was or what happens? Please

There are 6 questions and you have 1 minute to think about an answer before it starts recording. Then 3 minutes to record an answer. If you mess it up you have a second chance to record your answer but that's it.

I don't think anyone will give you much specifics about the questions, we all want the job as much as you, although there is information about what to expect all over this forum and even earlier in this thread. Read the job description again, see what skills they require and think about how you would be a good fit for the role.

Actually, you get about 12 minutes for each question, but it must be recorded and uploaded at the end of that 12 minutes, so you’ve got about 9 minutes to think.
you actually get as many chances as you want to re-record it as you can delete in the camera function if you know you’ve messed it up, but you only get one chance to re-record once you’ve watched the footage back.

Hi Lu...

Your question has been well answered above. Obviously they'll ask, tell us a time when you xyz scenario so have a few possibles pre written down to choose from. If you're comfortable infront of a camera (I'm not) you'll find it relatively easy. Done a week ago, still no result, but then again the application window is still open. Good luck.

To be honest the questions are more MMI style… i wonder what you might get asked at the real MMI then

Thanks to all of you! After reading your answers, this sounds similar to the OPC MMI interview... I was thinking the online Interview with LNER will be different to that

Submitted my video interview yesterday, been through the process before, getting to the face to face/zoom interviews and couple of years ago. Usually takes a good while to get from video stage to interview etc.

Do you remember roughly how long after the video interview you got told you’d made it to the next stage?

Thanks alot, I did the video Recording and all I got was a message saying I will get contacted after reviewing the video. I did it last week and I am not sure if it went well or not but we shall see. Do they let you know if you have passed the video interview or not?

Hi. Since you have been through the process, do you remember what the competency based interview was like? Because I wanted to know what's the difference between the online interview and the competency interview

OPC will only host psychometrics and, as a result, will only be obliged to share results directly with the TOC, as they are the ones paying for its slots and thus their client. Not every TOC will use OPC for psychometric testing, as a few have their own registered facilities that have been approved to conduct testing to the standard and with the necessary equipment.

The TOC is the one that will access the national database and tell you about your life, etc., and where you stand with the particular TOC results-wise, as you are the one they are dealing with directly. This is to avoid any conflict of interest or misinformation between the two parties involved.
I think I am having the same issues with the OPC. I did an online recruitment process VSE with Arriva back in 2023 and that was their recruitment process but not the official OPC... I then went to watford to dobthe OPC for C2C and passed the first stage but failed only the MMI on the second stage. ... now when I applied for a Trainee role with ARL again they said I failed the OPC twice when I only went to the centre once. Now I am wondering if other rail company will say the same. If they will use the Arriva online as part of my second attempts
