Announced this morning.

LM press release

London Midland has welcomed the announcement, by the Department for Transport (DfT), that the train operator will continue to run services between London, the West Midlands and the North of England until October 2017.

Passengers are set to benefit from more services, free WiFi, improved performance and better ticketing among many changes planned by London Midland

£13 million worth of improvements are planned over the next 18 months including:

Two extra evening services every weekday from London to the Trent Valley, providing an additional 2,300 seats from Euston each week;
Earlier services to central Birmingham on Sunday mornings from surrounding towns including Rugby and Lichfield, with new Sunday services from Longbridge, Dorridge and Whitlocks End. This will provide more than 900 extra seats every week, and benefit shoppers, workers and local businesses;
Free WiFi on long-distance services between London Euston, Northampton, Birmingham, Crewe, Stoke and Liverpool, with the aim that this will be free on all services when the next fully-competed franchise starts;
An extra daily return service on the Abbey line, between Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey, providing an extra 3,400 seats every week;
New and upgraded ticket machines at selected stations, with new ‘click and collect’ and contactless payment options;
More than 400 extra car parking spaces across three stations – Watford, Hemel Hempstead and Tamworth; and
New targets to improve customer satisfaction and train punctuality.

DfT announcment:

Passengers will benefit from £13 million worth of improvements – including more services, around 6,600 extra seats, free Wi-Fi and better ticketing – after the government agreed a new deal for rail services in the region today (3 December 2015).

Under the contract, which will deliver improved connections, a better customer experience and set tough new targets, London Midland will continue to run services between London, the West Midlands and the north-west of England until October 2017.

Rail Minister Claire Perry said:

We have already delivered significant improvements in the West Midlands and surrounding areas – including investing more than £60 million in a fleet of brand new trains, and the massive £750 million redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station which was completed earlier this year.

Today’s contract with London Midland builds on this work, and will not only ensure that customers continue to benefit from better journeys, but also support long-term economic growth in the region and beyond.

Extra Sunday services on my local line(s)? Get in! :D I might actually be able to arrive in town earlier than mid-morning, and leave later than teatime.

Although, with only "900 extra seats every week", that doesn't amount to much more than one extra train service on each of the three routes mentioned. Still, any improvement is to be welcomed when the service has been so limited for so long.

Or are there to be more 319s, if they can get the things to work? (A problem that Northern seem not to be having)

Are you being serious? The 319s have been dropping like flies at Northern despite Northern having a lot more than they need in service every day. 2 x Northern 319s failed in service on Monday.

"Two extra evening services every weekday from London to the Trent Valley"

Anyone know what services these will be, and what the unit diagram changes will be to accommodate them? Does weekday mean Mon-Fri only here?

Also when do these changes take effect? Thanks

Is there anything more meaningless than the "spin" of announcing "n,000 more seats each week"? Marketing babble at its worst... :roll:

No mention of extra capacity on the frequently overcrowded Hereford-Birmingham services then? :(

They'll be no way of getting additional DMUs before the Direct Award will end. A new order won't be delivered in time and electrification won't free up DMUs before mid to late 2017.

It's only for 18 months. An extension to the extension really! Perhaps a more robust single franchise in 2017 for the WCML sarf will be up for grabs. Will Virgin get in?

Seeing these depart New Street throughout the evening peak, they seem to be the least overcrowded of all 170 worked LM routes out of New Street. The Shrewsburys and Rugeleys suffer much worse. The 5 car Herefords in the evening peak seem to be the only trains that can leave BHM with everybody being able to get a seat!

That would need more DMUs, and there probably are none (yet). Much easier to keep a few EMUs out 'earning their crust' at the start or end of the day, that doesn't need more stock, juts additional train crew hours...

Common sense would probably say that whatever the new Northern orders (be that bi-mode or DMU) would form a sensible base for follow-on orders for other TOCs also requiring trains that aren't EMUs.

With regard specifically to London Midland, by the time new stock could be delivered, there could also be a large number of Scotrail class 170s for the taking. In either case, new or additional rolling stock of this kind will be a matter for the winner of the next West Midlands franchise.

A few additional 170s are likely to be available within the next franchise as a result of the Chase Line electrification, at any rate.

Yes they may, but if ordered about now, and let's assume the next Northern franchisee is just about to confirm this order, they wouldn't be available in the timescales of this extension, which is only dealing with (in railway terms) a pretty short period.

Even if there are behind the scenes moves to increase the number of DMUs available to the future LM franchisee beyond October 2017, it wouldn't be announced today.

Aren't there a couple of evening peak Northampton services which run as 12 car to Northampton and then become 4/8 car for onward journey to Birmingham with the remainder going out of service?

If there are - then this would be the obvious way to deliver a couple more TV services with minimal disruption.

Said to be more 319's en route.

Nooooooooooooo.

Unless they are confined to the Tring stoppers or MK (at a push) then they are not a welcome addition to the LM fleet.

Very childish :roll: ...I'd say anything which adds capacity IS a welcome addition to the LM fleet!

I want to know what a click and collect ticket machine is.

Interesting that they'll be accepting Contactless, as T&W Metro and Metrolink do.I've never seen a NR ticket machine accept payment with contactless before.

A potential further implication of this good news: more job/career opportunities, possibly with anyone already in their reserve pools?

SWT's 456's are a great example of refurbished commuter rolling stock!

The current LM 319's hurriedly (partial refurb) introduced into service, lack the respect of the fare paying pax so far!

Indeed although it's hardly groundbreaking technology that warrants a franchise commitment really, it should just be standard these days :|

Back in Dec 2011 LM rolled out a trial contactless payment card = "The Key" for brum cross city services similar to the Oyster card down here. I think it's come on song now.

I don't think that is what they mean by contactless in this context; they seem to be implying payment using a bank contactless payment card. EMV as its is usually known. They refer to upgraded TVMs having contactless payment options, and that should be achievable simply by replacing the card reader module in the existing TVMs.
