I'd have thought you'd be more likely to be poisoned by eating undercooked egg than completely uncooked bacon or sausage, though

Poisoned by what? Have you never eaten a soft-boiled egg? Or a fried egg with a runny yolk?

In the UK all egg-producing chickens are vaccinated against salmonella. That's what the Lion mark means.

New patterns of working. No more tea and coffee after departing but not till after the food is done. It also comes on the trolley

Mad for shorter travellers.

I just got tea about Doncaster from Kx. With my second gin and at the same time as the pudding/cheese.

The cod was a decent portion though.

Always thought it was odd to serve a hot drink just BEFORE dinner but if not, the service needs to be slicker than that.

OT: Gerallt gives you coffee about 5 mins before the starter, because they've not got many to serve, which is even more extreme!

On the subject of catering, is the Saturdays 20:44 Newcastle - Doncaster always a dry train, or is this just particular occasions ?

That's the 1900 from EDB and I'm pretty sure that it's dry every week. Apparently it's a pretty lively train by all accounts.

TBH it was very quiet when I was on it, until some not particularly inebriated rugby fans turned up at Newcastle.

Anyhow, best avoided then.

Gerald is more of a traditional restaurant car because it is quite small, I would guess.

The new menu certainly sounds like a improvement but the proof is in the pudding , I will be travelling on the 12:45pm Leeds to Kings X on the 19th January and the 17:33pm Kings X - Harrogate on the 28th January I hope there isn't a menu changeover before that date.

IF I have worked it out correctly the all day menu on 19th January should be Classic Steak & Ale pie and the Evening Menu on the 28th January should be rack of lamb and accompaniments

The changes to tea and coffee mean that if you regularly travel Leeds to Wakefield, you'd previously have gotten a tea or a coffee most every trip. Now, you've no chance of a hot drink but will most likely be able to choose a cold one. Last week no trains I was on had the cups laid out on the table either, so presumably they think it's more efficient this way and that people prefer their hot drinks after their food. I quite like this!

Rather brings it in line with the standard buffet service. On occasions when I've boarded Leeds bound EC services at Wakefield wanting a cup of tea, it's been closed.

I'm sorry, but I have zero idea how anyone can describe the apparent new hot drink arrangements as "better". It means that unless one is travelling on long journey then you don't get anything! What about people on short journeys, say KGX to Peterborough. That's not what's promised on their website, nor what people have come to expect.

Also, as far as myself is concerned, I want my coffee when I get on; not 20 minutes before I reach my destination on a 2 hour train ride!

OK so no coffee between London and Peterborough, but instead you get a glass of wine, a sandwich and a slice of cake?

It has to be said that breakfast is most definitely one area where East Coast could learn a thing or three from their West Coast colleagues.

The last EC bacon roll I had was nearly inedible due to the amount of soggy fat on it and the bacon tasted worse than cheap supermarket bacon. Perhaps it's time EC employed a few more chefs to allow a proper WC style breakfast service to be prepared. I mean, can you imagine some of the EC staff having to do the silver service their colleagues do? :o

Yes they do it quite regularly on some services. I've experienced at least once.

There are two crew leaders I know of that do it all the time. One is Newcastle based and I'm sure the other is London.

I'm on the 1100 from London tomorrow and looking forward to sampling the new menu. It can only be better than the bite size vegetable pasties and the almost tasteless bacon and potato salad I had between Edinburgh and Euston yesterday.

Them vegetable pasties on VTWC are the worse offering that they have had and it's annoying that they only offer one sandwich filling

And if your Veggie it's the pasties or nothing.

VTEC certainly have the superior product after 9am that's for sure. Whilst the choice may not be to everyone's palate there is usually something that will float your boat.

They should pay more attention to EMT's breakfast offering rather than VTWC. easily the best outside of FGW (chargeable) and Gerald (one service only).

Yes I once did the EMT breakfast service on a Saturday from Sheffield to London and it was brilliant every time they went round after a station they always asked if people wanted another round of toast , tea/coffee etc

1100 from London.

Any alcohol madam?
I'd prefer a cup of tea
That will be round in about forty five minutes
You are having a laugh

I can understand the serving a hot drink with or just after the food service but the stuff is dirt cheap why not just do another run with the food?

There also appears to be no trolleys other than the drinks ones. Sandwich and hot food orders being taken and then brought out on plates which seems a bit messy imo. I'm guessing that this has been done to prevent some people having both as it cannot be easier for the crew.

That's odd, they normally have a food trolley and a drinks trolley; you don't get sandwiches off the food trolley if you ask for hot food. It could be that it's very quiet and easier than dragging the trolley through.
