G'day everyone,

Catching up with an old school friend last weekend and reminiscing about our trainspotting adventures in the 1970's and early 1980's reminded me of all the depots that have closed in the last 30 odd years.

To kick things off Shirebrook TMD was one of the places we would head to at weekends in an effort to see what was 'on shed'. Over the years class 20's, 37's, 47's and 56's could all be seen in the shed yard. I'm guessing here that the TMD must have closed in the mid 1990's.

All suggestions would be very much appreciated and can also cover rolling stock as well. In all fairness the cull really started in the 1990's but one or two significant places had gone by the late 1980's which is why I've gone back to 1980.

Kind regards,

Richmond Commuter!

Where were the loco sheds at Darlington and Sunderland? I thought they'd both gone with the end of steam!

I forgot to add that we can also include depots that have closed and then re-opened so Carlisle Kingmoor can also be added to the Carlisle list!

there was a DMU depot to the north of the Station before the Bishop Line branches off (it is basically where the Banatynes gym/HQ is now on Haughton Road) it must have closed c.83

Sunderland - i think was a servicing point near the docks. I cant dredge up where exactly at present

I meant to ask if that was acceptable

Hammerton Street depot in Bradford.

Ore shed near Hastings, although that was more a stabling shed.

That was one of the depots that I was thinking had closed in the 1980's. For what its worth in addition to its DMU's it also had an allocation of class 03's. Memories!

Yes, have it in a book somewhere - definitely early 80's.

You are very likely going to get a long list!

Keeping local to me, Norwich shed (NW of Carrow Road) closed in 1982 at the time Crown Point TMD (SE of Carrow Road) came into use. My first visit to Norwich was around 1957 - so many changes ...

Best ...

Here's a few in the South West and South Wales ....

Ebbw Junction, Newport; Neath Cwrt Sart (this might have closed earlier than the 1980's, in fact); Barry; Port Talbot; Bristol Bath Road; Gloucester ...

and there's probably more than these!

Tinsley - full of Peaks as per.
Difficult to believe it went, always so busy and a huge allocation.

A few years later than the Sunderland shot and only a few miles away, the most inaccessible depot on the system if you were travelling by rail.

One local to me was Reddish ETD with its 76s and class 506 emu's usually several diesel types regularly seen there such as 24/25/40/47s plus 304s and the odd 504 third rail dc unit present for a visit to the wheel lathe, I even have a picture of 87002 there when brand new. I remember the first time I was taken there about 1969 there were still a couple of 77s visible and taking power Perhaps being prepared for transfer to NS in Holland, before I was old enough to visit, the depot also maintained the Blue Pullman units. I've never had the guts to take a trip down station road in recent years as l know it would now be heartbreaking to see what remains, because as far as I know it has now been redeveloped into a housing estate. :(

The roundhouse at Sunderland South Dock was demolished with the end of steam in 1967, but a diesel depot continued to operate on the site (adjacent to Prospect Row and the "Welcome Tavern" pub, at a higher level than the rest of the dock complex) until 1991, subsequently demoted to a stabling and fuelling point for a couple of years upon demolition of the depot buildings. I think it finally went around the same time as Wearmouth Colliery, in 1993.

Blyth Cambois closed shortly after in September 1994 of course, and Loadhaul (as was) centered it's servicing activities at a new purpose built facility at Tyne Yard, which opened at around the same time.

Entering the world and the railway scene a little later, for me the north east grids were synonymous with filthy Trainload Coal livery. I used to love the way they'd shake the ground as they passed the house, on their way to and from Wearmouth Colliery and Tyne Dock.

sigh

large logo will always be the quintessential 56 livery for me seen hauling a rake of HAA's around some dirty, industrial part of the north east.

As my twitter account shows i do like the sector symbols!

Technically Cathays was a works rather than a depot.
Carlisle Currock was another one that was a works.

You can't really tell it was ever there.

Yes, although that was mostly a carriage depot when I knew it.

Some others that spring to mind are:

Swindon; Newton Abbot; Reading West (?); Ranlegh Bridge (outside Paddington); Crewe Diesel Depot (the one by the station).

Near where the 3 ridings meet
Another line to consider for maintenance would be the closure of the repair side of the ex BREL Workshops such as York.
These could possibly also be considered as a loss on the new build side as well.

Where were the 504's on the Manchester - Bury line stabled and maintained, was there another depot on the line or was the line to Newton Heath electrified?

IIRC they had their own depot at Bury, now owned by the East Lancashire Railway.
