We do have one credit to that effect... we have opened one new extension all the way to final frequency!

Shaw and Crompton > Rochdale Railway Station

Good point kofers!
Plus what about the MediaCityUK extension? Ok it's not yet got its final destination sorted but it's on it's final frequency no?

The first T68A has been withdrawn, 2006
According to British Trams Online it was withdrawn after failing at Exchange Quay. It brings its short in service life of just 12 years to an end. Also,

On the M5000 front the latest example to enter service has been 3057 which brings the current fleet strength of this class to 50 although it is the 51st to carry passengers. 3013 remains out of service following accident damage earlier this year.

Isn't it better to go right through to Piccadilly rather than the interchange at Cornbrook? Better journey opportunities and frequencies is surely a good thing. I've waited ages at Market Street for a Piccadilly tram before now, good gosh that was awful! Granted it isn't something the MediaCityUK bit affects, just randomly mentioning it. Far better PIS on Metrolink would be most welcome!

I remember reading that there aren't enough trams for the MediaCityUK service to go to Piccadilly once all the extensions and frequency improvements have been made elsewhere. There will be 25 trams per hour between St Peter's Square and Cornbrook. If the MediaCityUK service continued to Piccadilly as it does now then that would be 30 per hour.

What the frequency of the Altrincham service at 8pm on a Saturday

Had to wait 35 minutes last night

No announcements, plenty of trams to other destinations, drivers of other trams not aware of any disruption

So can that be right a 30 min service on Saturday nights on Altrincham line?

Altrincham to Piccadilly is supposed to run every 12 minutes on Saturday evening. The only time the frequency is lower is when it runs every 15 minutes early Sunday mornings and Sunday evenings.

Media City UK must be the "poshest" short branch-line" Manchester Metrolink terminal station from what the plans appear to have in mind from Cornbrook. Will there be any other "short branch-line" incarnations still to appear on the Manchester Metrolink system ?

Everything else planned so far is supposed to run via the city centre. Maybe if there are any further extensions other than those under construction these might be shuttle services, such as a line to the Trafford Centre.

I think the reason why it's going to run into Cornbrook is to free up paths across the city. Remember that once everything opens there will be 84 tph in the Cornbrook - St Peters Square section. If you add in extra trams then in the event of say a bus not pulling forward or something then delays with become instant with such levels of traffic. It's to add slack into the timetable I think. I do agree that terminating at Cornbrook isn't ideal, Cornbrook station it's self needs some kind of wind break at the very least.

Have you noticed the PIDs going up across the city? Well in a few weeks hopefully real time information will be live at all stops except Mosley Syreet and Victoria (for obvious reasons). The new OT control room went live today and as TMS has been operating with 20 second accuracy in the city under test I can see PID operations very soon! However we'll have to wait for it to be used for full signalling!

I don't think so Paul I do agree media city is very snazzy with its little garden at the end and its fancy plaza. From the pictures on SCC, Rochdale Town Centre looks to be a fancy stop as do some of the Oldham Town stops. They're not branches but it'll be nice to look at as you terminate or pass through!

There must have been a gap in the service last night.

I can't imagine the TC line running as a Shuttle, I'd always imagined in running to Victoria via 2CC.

Aye probably a fair few people will be ******ed off when Cornbrook becomes the terminus for MediaCityUK services, but that's all that's been paid for unfortunately!

How can you get 84 if the number of trams per hour on each line is a multiple of 5?

I wonder how may people will actually bother to change at Cornbrook and just get the Eccles tram and walk from Harbour City, given that it is only 400 metres. I suspect people already do that now if the Eccles tram comes first.

On the way into town it isn't too serious as the sheer volume of trams should mean that the wait at Cornbrook is short.

It's the total number of trams using the section. I didn't actually come up with said figure it is what has always been said on SCC...

An easy but very expensive way to solve envy thing is to four track Cornbrook - St Peters Square. They're all ready 4 tracking SPS so it'd be an extension of that really. At Cornbrook another island platform for City bound trams and we know the viaduct can take 4 tracks it'd just need strengthening. The bird cage on the approach to G-Mex has another one to the side. If that's refurbished that becomes the City Bound set of tracks. The issue is G-Mex stop it's self. The only way I could see is if G-Mex gives us some of their car park and then other ramp is built for City Bound trams. Then connect up at SPS. I think this could be done but it'd require: remodelling Cornbrook Junction, building a new viaduct for the additional island at Cornbrook, strengthening the existing viaduct, re-tracking the current viaduct and remodelling the end of Cornbrook, refurbishing the other bird cage viaduct on approach to G-Mex, rebuilding G-Mex stop and buying land next to it, building a new ramp, re tracking the G-Mex - SPS section. Very expensive but the benefits would be loads of additional capacity which would probably allow Media City to terminate at Victoria!

Here is the future plan of services running between St Peter's Square and Cornbrook as I understand it:

Bury - Altrincham every 12 minutes (5 tph)
Piccadilly - Altrincham every 12 minutes (5 tph)
Piccadilly - Eccles every 12 minutes (5 tph)
Shaw/Rochdale - Airport every 12 minutes (5 tph)
Shaw/Rochdale - East Didsbury every 12 minutes (5 tph)

That's a total of 25 tph, so 50 tph both directions combined.

I think 84 tph is the maximum TMS on CBK viaduct can take
so if you add in:-
Port Salford - Victoria
Media City - Victoria
Airport - Piccadilly?
(The other future line plus MC to a better connected place and 6 minute service on AL)

Ashton - Eccles every 12 minutes (5 tph)
Victoria - Airport every 12 minutes (5 tph)
Shaw - East Didsbury every 12 minutes (5 tph)
Rochdale - East Didsbury every 12 minutes (5 tph)

making a total of 30, or 60 in both directions combined.

Cheers for that, makes sense. Not been up there on Metrolink for a good few months so not seeing the PIDs yet, no.

Next time you visit hopefully PIDs will be in operation :D

The new Control Room went live today by the way. Not heard about any issues so must've gone well, yay!!

If anyone experienced a delay during the day there was someone threatening to jump of the multi story car park near Shudehill requiring the stop to be closed and trams stopped for a short period of time.

Also someone on SCC sent in a freedom of information request to TfGM for metrolink timetables and they got them so if anyone would like a link I'd be happy to send you it

I know this has been discussed on other forums, but comparing the amount of work that has to be completed to complete the short section from Rochdale railway station to the new terminus in Rochdale town centre when compared to the full operational completion of the Oldham town centre route, would it be good to see the Rochdale line opening first and allow the routes for pedestrians and traffic to return back to normal and an air of normality return to Drake Street and the other areas of the town centre.

Has anyone any news as to how long it will take the ORR to give their approval to the Woodlands Road station closure that is in their hands at the present time ?

Any idea what was the total cost of all the construction of the two-platform station and all the associated trackworks at Media City UK ?

It was £20m including four trams to operate it. The station is probably the most substantial new build on the network with two bays rather than an Island and substantial landscaping and paving. Normally they budget £1m for the most basic island platform upto £5m for the most substantial stations.

I don't understand why they built two platforms. An island would seem preferable for a terminus. Then you can't be on the wrong platform for the next tram.

I have often wondered as to the exact reason for the specific station design at Media City. Was it intended that one platform would be used for terminal services and the other platform for a Manchester Piccadilly - Media City UK - Eccles service ?

Land management, the twin bays minimises land take while disguising the platforms from a distance by allowing landscaping directly around the stop, if it was an island platform you would have the dead space of the tracks on either side and which wouldnt be usable by pedestrians or landscapable. Essentially the U shape of the station is more compact than a W shape would be.

Bit hard to picture on the ground bur try picturing it from the air.

Hello!:D

That sounds correct. There do not seem to be plans to actually run at that frequency though.

Currently the real cap on frequency is set by Mosley Street, which was quoted some years ago as 25 tph, but it could be made to 30 tph "with improvements" - though it is not clear what improvements that might include - really they seem to be waiting for 2CC to open.

Assuming a limit of 25 tph through Mosley Street, the cutting back of mediacity to cornbrook therefore leaves one free path of 5 tph - so the question then is what do they want that path for? Are they going to put on a 6 minute service to St. Werburgh's when East Didsbury opens?
