Depends what you mean by later ones. I understand 3111 (and one or two others >3100) have moved to Old Trafford depot to work Airport line

TMS trams (3061 to 3116) can only run on Shaw to Piccadilly and Rochdale to Exchange Square for current moment, this is because Ashton line that allowed TMS trams are running to Bury and with Bury line isn't under TMS, trams between 3001 to 3060 are only allow to run on Bury to Ashton route.

Off Skyscrapercity site trams number 3101, 3102, 3103, 3105, 3106, 3108, 3109, 3110 and 3111 which will all base at Queens Road depot have now all transfer to Trafford depot to run on Airport and Didsbury lines (and from 1st August MediaCity line)

The older ones CAN run on the Rochdale and Shaw routes, it's just more better to run them on the Bury - Ashton and to ensure there's enough spare in case of a fault. Indeed, 3032 was on Ashton - Rochdale yesterday.

I saw, and rode on, several of this batch on the routes west of the blockade today i.e. East Didsbury, Airport, Altrincham.

I think you mean Bury to Altrincham

Yeah sorry all trams can be use on all lines expect for Bury (Crumpsall to Bury) and Altrincham lines (Brooklands to Altrincham) due to them still under Block signals, all other lines can have any trams in service parfrom Ashton line (for next eight weeks) as that service running to Bury which isn't under TMS at this current moment mean ATS trams could only serve on that route.

A couple of people on Skyscrapercity are saying eight more trams have been ordered, which would bring the total to 128.

It's been reported on Skyscrapercity that 3119 arrived today and that 3120 is due on 10 September.

Have we got confirmation that 3121 to 3128 will be built now? Good news that the last of them up to 3120 are nearly all here and in service!

Halfed the length and doubled the frequency of the South Manchester line?

Yes, I think the only timetabled doubles are the daytime Altrincham to Bury services. So mostly you will see singles, the upside is better frequencies to East Didsbury and out to Shaw on the Rochdale line.
