The Daily Telegraph, alone of the 'heavyweight' daily newspapers, declared itself in favour of Brexit prior to the referendum, so I feel the article published in yesterday's edition ( i.e. before the departure of Gove) by Juliet Samuel should resonate with the many Conservative Party members who doubtless read the paper. I am hopeless with technology, so can't provide a link, and. in any case, I've got the print version in front of me. Juliet Samuel covered the City as a reporter for five years when Andrea Leadsom was on the Treasury Select Committee and I shall quote what she said:-
''I covered many hearings during that time and I often found her questions imprecise, provocative and unhelpful. They seemed like grandstanding rather than forensic examination aimed at catching out a witness. Naturally this earned her some media attention but rarely pinned down a target or improved the substance of the debate.''
She goes on to say that corporate governance, which Ms Leadsom claims to have been in for her last job before becoming an MP is a ' small, gossipy world. Its leading lights are tough, clever negotiators who hold company managers to account on behalf of shareholders. I had met a number of them during my time in the City. Unfortunately, none of those I called had heard of Ms Leadsom before the recent campaign.'
I can't quote everything else she said, some of which are in any case quotes from other pieces by Ms Leadsom's former colleagues, but suffice to say Ms Samuel somewhat doubts Ms Leadsom's credentials for becoming PM.
