The two weekday evening Hope Valley stopping turns booked for 4 car sets have reliably produced 142s since the new year: one set works the 16:49 Man Picc - Sheffield, 18:14 SHF - MAN, 19:49 MAN - SHF and 21:14 SHF - MAN and the second set works the 17:49 MAN - SHF, 19:14 SHF - MAN, 20:49 MAN - SHF and 22:47 SHF - MAN.
Tonight gave 142036 on the first turn and 142051 on the second. Last night 142051 and 142045 were out, each accompanied by a 150 or 156. The full length trip on the 'stopper' costs £7 for an adult single each way, if bought before departure. A Derbyshire Wayfarer covers Sheffield to New Mills Central which is useful if starting from my end of the route. Here's 142051 at Sheffield platform 7 last night, awaiting its 21:14 departure to Manchester Piccadilly. *Edited to correct a unit number*

142011 is on the 18:14 Sheffield - Man Picc diagram this evening. The second Hope Valley 4 car set is a pair of 150/1s. First time this year I've seen 011 in Sheffield.142011_31-1-20_KevW.jpg

Thanks for the info! I managed to travel on 142047 and 142078. It's always fun to travel on a pacer running 'express' between Salford Crescent and Bolton :p

For the second Saturday running, there was no 142 coupled to the 10:35am Kirkby to Manchester Victoria today.
142035 +158872 were also on the 17:54 Rochdale to Blackburn.

Planning to use a Northern £10 rover on saturday. Which routes would I be most likely to have a good chance of riding on a Class 142? All suggestions welcome.

I assume better chance in the north west? (as opposed to South Yorks routes out of Sheffield)

Thanks.

I was just about to ask the same question.

Blackburn, Rochdale and Clitheroe seem the best bets.

I can't believe I'm searching out these buggers! It was Exemouth 1986 when I first experienced a 'Skipper'.

Yes, I noted that from the posts ref last w/e. Maybe some other routes?

Got to use these newspaper vouchers for something of note! I can't recall 1st time I rode on a Pacer, but presumably it was 1980s too.

My first class 142’s for haulage were on the 5th of February 1986 when I had 142024 from Truro to Falmouth and back, later the same day I had 142018 from Plymouth to Gunnislake and back. :D

142043 coupled to a 150 was on the 9:35am Kirkby to Manchester Victoria today. The weekday working of this is still regularly seeing a 142/150 combi.

Quite a different beast back then with the Leyland TL11 engines and SCG gearboxes. My first trip on one was around Christmas 1986 from Wigan NW to Preston. I always liked some Pacer thrash on he WCML!

Do you have a photo? Would love to see

Sorry no. I don't usually take photos of trains. I mainly take ones of vintage buses at rallies. I did however snap a 142 at Carnforth station last May. I will look for it. I think that it was 142090.

does that route get them on saturdays too?

The 9:35 Kirkby to Manchester Vic does not have a 142 on it on Saturdays. Until two weeks ago the Saturday 10:35 Kirkby to Manchester Vic had a 142/150 combi on it, but the last two Saturdays it has just been a 150/1.
