When did that happen? I don't see 323s often but I haven't seen footage of any that suggests a traction electronics change - I'm sure given the distinctive noise the original system on the 323s produced that it would make a noticeable difference...

The IGBT brochure is dated 9.16, early in the Arriva Northern tenure.
I also didn't know Holec was now part of Alstom, which improves the long-term maintainability of 323s.
No doubt funded by Porterbrook as part of the life-cycle.

The 319 upgrade was funded by DfT at the tail end of the previous franchise, and was the minimum necessary to get them into service out of Liverpool in 2015.

156 in Plat 1 at Leeds tonight. If that wasn't unusual enough it was stood behind the ex-Scotrail 158.

Driver training workings? 323?

http://www.charlwoodhouse.co.uk/rail/liverail/train/12673322 5Z53 13:09 Preston to Huyton
http://www.charlwoodhouse.co.uk/rail/liverail/train/12673321 5Z54 13:56 Huyton to Wigan North Western

Diagram appears to start with 5Z50 off Allerton at 0917 with a run up to Preston.
5Z51 at 11:02 then returns it as far as St. Helens Central.
5Z52 at 11:35 Another Run up the WCML to Preston.
Lay over in Preston until the 5Z53 and 5Z54 highlighted above.
Returning to Allerton as 5Z55 from Wigan North Western at 14:28

They do say diagrammed for 319 (100mph). I know diagrammed does not equal actual, but will running on WCML, with a 90mph unit in path designed for 100mph.... Does that work? If it is a 323 it is interesting to me that running is focused on Huyton - Preston, and not on the Chat Moss, where I thought they would be more likely to run the faster accelerating units. But it does seem very plausible for Driver Training as you suggest.

It's understood 319s can't run to Stoke because their inferior acceleration means they are slower than 323s on stopping services, even on the WCML where there are line speeds of over 90mph.

Presumably more drivers are going to have to be trained on 319s as well, so maybe the paths have been secured for the slower train (the 319) so that they can be used for training drivers on 319s or 323s, as required.

The reason for 323s towards Preston and not the Chat Moss will most likely be a capacity issue. The Chat Moss is a very busy line these days.

Fairly straightforward to do huyton-preston. Train will only conflict with other traffic between Wigan and Euxton. St Helens Central line has capacity to accommodate the unit fairly easily .

All of 5Z50 to 5Z55 are now showing as cancelled.
5Z50 to 5Z55 are given as operative SSuX 5/3/18 to 18/5/18. They're shown on RTT as having been cancelled today, and they're not shown at all in respect of yesterday. Tomorrow is another day.

A 155 has been sent to Hull for crew training ahead of the May timetable change.

So we've got Liverpool crews learning 323s, Barrow crews learning 158s, Leeds crews learning 156s and now Hull crews learning 155s - and that's before any new classes are introduced!

Plus northeast drivers learning 158s too very soon.

5Z50 to 5Z55 (presumed to be crew training runs on 323s, Allerton - St Helens Central -Preston) have also been cancelled 7/3/18 and 8/3/18. It looks as though they're not going to run today, either (9/3/18), but at the moment only 5Z50 is showing as cancelled.

Given that 5Z51 through 5Z55 have all been "activated" on RTT exactly 2 hrs before they're due to set off, it's highly likely that they won't be running.
The "2 hr" trick is always a good thing to observe.
