Just to clarify, does this mean that the Buxton and the Chester services will be run by a common pool of units, or will there be services which start at Chester and go via Manchester to Buxton?

Almost certainly separate services operated by the same units.

According to MCRUA they'll be more inter-working between Buxton and Mid-Cheshire line services from May 2018.
Even on the existing running times, interworking the Chester and Buxton services would reduce the number of DMU sets in use (on the basic hourly service) from seven to six, yet still permit an average turnround time of around fifteen minutes. At present the turnround times are abnormally generous. If the Chester journeys go skip-stop at the same time, this will add a few extra minutes to turnround times.

Basic Off-Peak departure times from Manchester Piccadilly:

XX:09 Greenbank, calling at Stockport, Navigation Road, Altrincham, Hale, Ashley, Mobberley, Knutsford, Plumbly, Lostock Gralam, Northwich and Greenbank

XX:40 Chester, calling at Stockport, Altrincham, Hale, Knutsford, Northwich and Greenbank, Cuddington, Delamere, Mouldworth and Chester

So anyone wishing to travel from Navigation Road, Ashley, Mobberley, Plumley, or Lostock Gralam to points beyond Greenbank is going to have at least a c.20 minute wait at Greenbank (or wherever else they choose to change).

Remember that this is the users association and not the DfT or Northern so it could be wrong. Best thing to do is wait for the May timetable to be released.

The calling patterns posted by Thomas6187 are what Northern put in the Stakeholder consultation document, not what was reported by MCRUA. If it stays the same as in the consultation document the Mon-Fri Chester services will make additional calls in the morning peak, around school/college finishing times, in the evening peak and post-7pm when the additional Greenbank services won't run.

MCRUA weren't happy about that proposal but Mon-Fri 99.9% of passengers will either get an improved service or a service that still meets their needs e.g. most off-peak passengers from Mobberley (which is a low number anyway) travel towards Altrincham and beyond. However, on Saturdays there is more demand for Chester and Delamere.

I guess that they could extend the stopping service on Saturdays to Chester and during summer, have the semi-fast stop Delamere & Chester only. Also congrats on post #666 <D

Surely more people overall benefit from trains to/from Manchester being at a half hourly interval than would benefit from designing the lowest possible connection time for the cross-Greenbank passengers from the smaller stations?

Quite, I was simply making a point that I thought may have been overlooked. Yes, the vast majority of travellers will benefit from the changes.

Exactly the same thing happened recently on the Nottingham to Lincoln Line. Most of the hourly trains to Lincoln now run non stop between Nottingham and Newark and the smaller stations are served by the Matlock to Newark hourly stopping train. I know some passengers from stations like Carlton and Lowdham were not happy with an approx 30 minutes wait at Newark Castle for a connection to Lincoln. However, Nottingham to Lincoln needed speeding up and that was probably the best way of doing it. Many of the smaller stations between Nottingham and Newark now have a more frequent service than they have had for years, but now very few through trains to Lincoln.

Will Northern have enough units to deliver the timetable given the cascades seem to be running behind schedule?

90% of the proposed May 2018 changes are postponed December 2017 changes, so they already have allowed for a 6 month delay in getting additional units. The cascade of 150s from GWR to Northern which was supposed to start in September, is now starting to happen.

Will the 156s 158s and 170s be with Northern by May? Thought they were a bit later in the year?

Scotrail units won't be here before June. They'll also be the 769s and any units freed up by North West electrification.

The two Blackpool services, the TPE and the Barrow/Windermere makes four, what's the other one?

Transpennine Express
Edinburgh Waverley / Glasgow Central - Manchester Airport

Northern
Barrow-in-Furness / Windermere - Manchester Airport
Blackpool North - Manchester Airport
Blackpool North - Macclesfield
Preston - Manchester Victoria

I believe that in place of Buxton services, there will be equivalent direct trains from Lancashire (Blackpool? Preston?) to Stoke-On-Trent
