Northern Unit Refurbishments

The majority of 158’s in the Northern fleet which have had the PRM modifications are not classed as a refurbishment. Only the units with the new seats in can be classed as refurbished and then they are not entirely complete.

The previous franchise gave the units a refresh (although claimed it was a refurb) which is why so many original fittings remain.

Some original fittings will remain on the refurbished units such as lighting panels, luggage rack etc... as there is no need to replace them as they are still fit for purpose.
Good point Neptune, I do wonder if those parts are removed for cleaning though.
I maybe wrong bit I'm pretty sure the ex WYPTE examples (158901-158910) have still retained the red overhead luggage shelves!

The glass in the partition for the luggage rack with that old etching on it! Wow. I'd forgotten about that. Half expected to see the payphone that the SWT 159s had in the background of the vestibule!
Hahahaha!!!!...........I was half tempted to ask the trolley lady if she sold BT phonecards!!

No the red overhead racks on the 158/9’s was replaced by blue at their refresh done by the last franchise.

All parts retained on the final refurb should be removed, cleaned, repainted and refitted.

Ah ok Neptune. I carnt remember the last time I travelled on an ex WYPTE example.
On a slightly different point, when are the whole refurbished fleet of trains getting USB ports fitted?
I travelled on 150220 from Bingley to Lancaster, which has been refurbished and had the USB ports fitted. I then caught 156441 from St Bees to Carlisle, which had been refurbished, but had no USB ports.

Just leaves;
6 150/1s 105/107/109-111 and 122
9 150/2s 201/209/210/215/218/224-226/268
12 156s 425/426/429/447/449/459-461/464/465/485/496
3 158/8s 786/789 and 870
6 158/9s 901/903/906/907/909 and 910,
before the PRM deadline at the end of the year.
15 323s 323223 - 323233/235-7 and 239, should all be done by easter 2020.

I thought 158870 was currently away for refurb?

Are there two standards of refurb being done?

Some 158s and most 150s haven't received the Wifi or charging sockets yet but have received the cosmetic updates

Here’s an internal photo’ I took last Thursday of 158904. You can see the blue rack, as well as the tall ironing board seats.

.
If only units with new seats are classed as refurbished then presumably 158752-9 the 3 car 158s which were done first and have kept their original seats and moquette in many instances are not classed as refurbished then? They did get new carpets and repainted wall and ceiling panels so that’s more than the DDA mods, but not new seats or wifi Usb. They are looking tired again in some instances tbh.

The 3 car units will return for new seats when their time comes as well as the USB fitment, pretty much the same as the 2 car units that have only had PRM mods. The first few will also need repainting internally as they didn’t receive the dark blue end walls etc... much the same as 155346 and 150275.

I was on 150275 today, not sure if it's been mentioned yet but it's gained USB ports and the new seat covers. It's retained the turquoise grab rails

Today, I travelled on the 13.44 from Beverley to Scarborough. It was formed of 158908, and it too has no wifi or usb sockets. Aircon not working on it either.
Here’s a photo’ I took after arrival, P.5. Scarborough.

The USB sockets and wifi are being done later on - as mentioned earlier in the thread it’s more important that Northern get the PRM mods out of the way first before the January 2020 deadline (minus the pacers).

Not sure about the aircon - other than it must have not been treated during refurbishment maybe?

The priority is, naturally, to get the PRM mods sorted before 31/12/19. USB, and reservation indicators, are superfluous to the 2020 deadline. They're doing the refurbishment in two (or more) stages

Does that particular 158 have the ironing board seats?

The PRM and redecoration is for nothing mechanical and is all cosmetic. Northerns neglect of air con is legendary.
