According to our local paper last month he skidded and the back of the lorry struck the parapet, then gravity took over...

Ironically, it appears he was only driving there in the first place because he was taking part in delivering cement in connection with the rebuilding of Epsom station - and the train would have earlier passed through Epsom on the way to Guildford...

( Better explain that; the diagrams are such that off peak trains from Waterloo to Guildford via Epsom return via Cobham and vice versa ).

I see....What is it with lorry drivers? They seem to have an addiction to crashing!

It certainly is rather ironic that he was taking cement to the station :D

Best wishes to the people involved or injured in the accident. Apparently the 455/9 was quite badly damaged, and could be a write off, not surprising really considering a cement mixer fell on its roof, which is a testament to the strong design. If the driving carriage can't be repaired couldn't they reuse a driving carriage from 317 511? Yes, I'm aware it has different windows and a slightly different looking front end, as well as it being an AC unit rather than a DC powered unit, but they were able to successfully use a 507 driving car to return a 314 to traffic. Also it seems increasingly unlikely that 317 511 will ever return to traffic, so it would be making good use of it.

It was the Motor and Trailer coaches of the 455 that were the worst damaged, not the Driving coaches, so it seems likely the unit will be written off.

What's up with 317511 anyway?

317 511 has been used as a Christmas Tree for about 3 or 4 years; supposedly always "next in line for return to traffic" but equally always gets left "until the next slot"...

Very annoying as it's the only thing I need on NXEA for a photo....!!

I believe that the fire damaged vehicles from both units have been back to Wabtec for repair. The reason that 511 has not been returned to service appears to be that it is not required in traffic. Given the length of time that has been OOU and the extent to which it would seem to have been stripped I can't honestly believe that it will ever turn a wheel in revenue-earning service again, especially as there is likely to be a new-build of EMU's for the StanEx service and a cascade of Cl317's to other services as a result.

This was taken from another thread.

since then, it has been used as a Christmas tree for other units :)

I'd say either that is a typo or poorly worded
Both are inexcusable on a media outlet website, judging by the font, I assume they are affiliated with the Guardian newspaper.

Either that or our under-age drivers are better drivers than eastern europeans.

Some very nasty damage to the train involved; any further news on its proposed repair and return to use? I recall a plan to use cars from the stored SE 508 units?
