I’m not sure that’s the most sensible use given the Pacer’s fondness for letting water in. Not going to do the books any good!

I can now say...

It's owner is Network Rail
Well, that's one outcome I didn't see coming! Perhaps it will last a bit longer than the weedkiller-fitted 141 did...

Not sure why they've gone for the PRM unit just to rip out the PRM stuff though, presumably because no preservationists wanted it.

So basically the entire 144 fleet has survived, admittedly 009 being used by fire and rescue service probably means it's life extension will be limited. Has this 100% survival rate ever happened before? (Outside of single unit classes such as class 140 prototypes etc. Which I don't really count).

I don’t think that 144009 will end up like the average 15 year old Nissan Micra seen on every fire station forecourt. I think it’ll be used for things such as rescue training (ie fill the coaches with smoke).

They wouldn’t get hold of a train to destroy it within weeks.

Good point.

Shame because I'd love to see a recreation of the 1984 nuclear flask test crash, except using a few Merseyrail 142s instead of a class 46. That would be great.

The flasks can be made of cheap cardboard and still be able to smash the Pacers nicely!

Can I check whether this list shows the actual current locations of the units or their final intended owner?

I ask, as my notes still have 55801 & 144005 at Worksop, 144015 at Heaton and 144021 at Doncaster Belmont.

My notes may well be wrong, so all updates very welcome.

Thanks

Were 144s used in early 2020 even if coupled with another train, or did they bow out on 31.12.19?

They were used (mostly on their own) in service until the end of March last year - I believe they had dispensation to keep running till May and I remember seeing something suggesting they could've kept on going till December (this was in about February/early March).

Dispensation 144 was initially to August 2020.
But got extended to December 2020.
As a covid result off further use.
However it never did happen 144s ended service on the final remaining services on the first Friday in April 2020.
Sheffield to huddersfield before being moved to keighley and worth valley.
And that location meant at the time.
The future wasn't great.
Instead 142s went on on a few services in the north west till end November 2020.
Mainly until the remaining 195 entered service.
However due to covid and less units required elsewhere meant on the north west side could get by despite the 769 issues.
However though covid 19.
Most likely saw swings and roundabouts take effect as it goes.
A gain on the 142s till end November.
Don't forget the 142s was only four left by early March 2020. Two spare and only two on am/pm only peak and a part time day diagram on the Atherton line.
And February the 14th 2020 saw 8 142s off lease. And by March 6th 2020.
Was the final 142s at the time on the hope valley, only for them another 142 x2 also to go off lease.
However had covid not had happened as soon as 195 or some 769 into service due to 769 training at the time would have saw off the x4 142s during April 2020.
However Sheffield side the 144s would have remained to end off August 2020.
Maybe a bit longer who knows.
Until the 769 released enough 1502 units ie sprinters to replace the 144 Pacers on Sheffield side.
With the final months off 144s ie around August 2020. Mainly being on Sheffield to huddersfield services only.
However it was a shame because originally August bank holiday would have a seen a 144 farewell tour on the above line via the penistone partnership.
However covid 19 2020.
Instead saw 142s being extended to dec 2020. From may 2020.
Which most likely would not have happened.
Mainly due to north west 769 and 195 hope valley line issues.
However there was enough 150 units to go around due to less units needed for traffic elsewhere which saw and due to crewe knowledge on lines worked which saw 1502 series. Being moved from the north west to wipe out the 144s on Sheffield side. Far quicker than intended.

It did seem a bit odd how they were seemingly more eager during the early months of last year to get rid of the 142s than the 144s from a PRM perspective, given the 144s were doing mostly solo running and the 142s could only operate with PRM-compliant units at that point, but I digress. Maybe I'm wrong and there was a legitimate reason for doing it that way, and of course it ultimately didn't work out like that.

Part of the reason for solo 144s being permitted under the derogation was that certain routes required it until platform extensions were completed and signed off. 142s by the end only worked over Manchester way, where they worked in multiple. On the other hand 144s were required for Penistone (3-car) and Huddersfield to Castleford (2-car) until platform extensions were complete and permission was re-granted for 150s to use platform 5 at Huddersfield.

Does anyone know which 142 is outside at Eastleigh having been rubbed down / partially primed? It has no numbers but could, I think, be 142003 or 142014?

What's happening with these? I assume the fact they're repainting it that it's not destined for scrap.

True, but were the Pacers gifted to their new carers, or maybe changed hands for a nominal fee, as happened to the thumpers a long time ago. I think they changed hands for a pound
The Angel owned sets (Class 142) are not nominal value, but Angel have donated the sums raised to charity. Porterbrook have tended to go for the donating vehicle/nominal fee route for their vehicles.

With the heritage stock where this applied, I believe it was £1 plus the buyer paying the transportation costs to take it to its new home.
