What does MA mean?
Motor Alternator. It takes the traction current and converts into a more friendly 110V (I think) to power everything except the traction motors and heaters. A bit like a diesel generator, but uses electricity to make electricity instead of diesel.

the MA outputs 415v 3 phase AC, the auxiliaries are fed from this via battery charger and batteries produce 110v dc control circuits
