I would have thought you were an Essex lad, what with the Rochford postcode you've chosen as your username.

Gosh, you do know your postcodes! I have wondered the same thing myself before now (before realising the "SS" relating to Super Sonic), although calling myself "SS3" was never in the question! You can expect a test later tonight. Example question for you: Where is E6?

And likewise I would have thought that Kernowfem was Cornish.

Hasn't she admitted as much before now? I remember when my father and I were in Polperro in '06, and a coach pulled up saying "Kernow, nr England"!

I think 4SRKT will get all you can throw at him, re postcodes.

E6 is East Ham, but it's not that impressive on the internet as how can you tell I'm not looking at a list?

15 years of working in the parcels industry can turn one a little, well, peculiar.....

As for SS3, that's the Shoeburyness end of Saaaaarffend if I'm not mistaken.

Sorry :(

Lesson Two in "How to push away a girl" (Lesson One bring to quite literally push her).

SS3 is the SRY end of Southend; I don't see why it's considered Southend-on-Sea when Westcliff (SS0) and Leigh (SS9) have their own though!

It's very random the way post towns are allocated IMHO. I wonder if Westcliff was carved out of Southend, as zero districts are unusual, and most occur where there isn't also a 10 (SL0: Iver, BL0: Bury, HA0: Wembley), or in the case of CR0 because the Croydon office was chosen as the pilot scheme and was actually originally the all-alpha CRO. This is why there is no CR1 district in the CR area, although IMHO there should be as CR0 has easily the largest number of addresses of any district the country, and this has been dealt with by having business addresses in the CR0 district called CR9, meaning that CR0 and CR9 uniquely are two districts covering the same territory.

And who was it that said postcodes couldn't be fun....... ;)

BS39 is an outlying Bristol district around Paulton near Radstock
CM12 is Billericay
TW14 is Feltham
SN1 is Swindon (natch)
PR8 is Southport

I was surprised to see just how far the Birmingham postcode extends to Sandwell (B61*), Tamworth (B80*) and Solihull (B90*) despite many of the outer postcodes not coming under Birmingham City Council's authority.

* = numbers are actually guesses but the B is accurate last time I checked (Nov 2010, we used postcodes to determine which office dealt with each person. It was a good day when you could transfer out a particularly difficult case)

Question for 4SRKT then:

What is Britain's largest town (including suburbs as separate towns) to not have its on unique code (i.e. Southend has SS)? I do know this.

Edit: Ah! A Southend advert has appeared in the Google Ads at the top! <( And other places at home...!

I'm not sure TBH. Candidates would include Barnsley and Cheltenham.

Or if this is a trick-ish question, Middlesbrough could well be the answer because the office there has the area code TS.

It's a common assumption that postcode areas have something to do with local authorities. In fact they don't as they are derived from the logistics arrangments of Royal Mail and nothing else. Also the B postcode is correctly called the 'B postcode area'. 'Birmingham' postcodes are only B1-B48. The B area has the largest number of districts in the country, and goes up to B98 (Redditch), and extends not only into other Metropolitan Districts of the West Midlands, but into Staffordshire (Tamworth), Worcestershire (Bromsgrove, Redditch) and Warwickshire (Alcester).

I fear this topic has gone a tad off topic

It's probable that the ads use your IP address to judge your location and thus target ads (as an aside the Job centre website seems to think that Basildon is near Birmingham!!)

Cheers, for some reason it never occurred to me that they wouldn't be based on local authorities (and despite my avatar's suggestion I'm not being sarcastic)

I genuinely had no idea what a/the MHC was before I read this then Googled it about 10 minutes ago...

At least they can't block 'underage' members from various pages on here... :D

Where's my "flirting friend" when you need her...?

Anyone got any more Sleeper stories, or advice for this poor loser...?

EDIT: Come on Matt! Even I know what the MHC is!

P.S.: LA boundaries change too often for postcodes to match them. The cost to Royal Mail would be prohibitive.

SECOND EDIT, more than three weeks later: Blackpool would beat Middlesbrough, but by only circa 4,000.

And we all know what becomes legal at 16!

Of course I meant joining the army. What were you thinking of?

I was actually thinking of SS4's and 4SRKT's answers :D

Not related so much the MHC, but to being 16: why is the legal age for MHC activities 16, yet watching it (online) is 18?

Buying liqueur chocolates, surely?

Is that not 18 now? I speak as someone who has sold cigarettes.

You may be right. It was 16 in my day when I used to work before school in a newsagents across the road from BREL York. When the night shift came off work serious quantities of fags were sold. And on Fridays (pay day) a lot of porn mags as well!
