I think you've missed out the Ironbridge to Madeley jnt line which is basically intact and is supported by the Telford and Wrekin MPs and more importantly has third party funding from the developers of the old Ironbridge Power Station site.

The five Shropshire MPs have written to the transport minister. Have any put an application in?

I think that the Ironbridge to Madeley Jnt line is on the list as it was submitted by the MPs for Telford and the Wrekin, the track is intact and more importantly there is significant third party funding from the developers of the Ironbridge Power Station site.

Didn't know it had support. I had thought it would be submitted but had no confirmation I'll add it.

Millhouses (and Heeley) should be a quick win, in theory, but it would need full reinstatement of the second pair of tracks.

I think (don't quote me on this) there are already plans to reinstate the third track on that line as part of HS2, at least someone said there was in this forum.

Millhouses is a tricky one as the line is known for problems with congestion which should be helped with double tracking around Dore.

Excellent, many thanks indeed for producing this list... I see that Skipton-Colne has moved forward a stage according to today's reports, and Now in the DfT's 'develop phase.

A feasibility study was completed for SYPTE in 1997 but it would have been much better done before 1992 when the site of the old steam era sheds and two tracks were sold off for the Tesco superstore. HS2 is suggesting a 3rd track could squeeze through the remaining gap betwen Tesco and Sainsbury's on the opposite side of the tracks.

Ideally Tesco should be encouraged to update their store by building a new one on stilts together with park and ride and new station on the reinstated railway tracks beneath. It wouldn't happen quickly, about 10 years at warp rail speed, by which time the Tesco store would be about 35 years old, ripe for redeveloping.

I really like the idea of 4 tracking the line as it would increase capacity south of Sheffield but it would be a challenge. It would allow reinstatement of Heeley and Millhouses.

It isn't just the Tesco store. Various incursions have been made into the former 4 track bed. Slewed tracks for starters but then associated signalling and track access arrangements. Odd bits here and there appear to have been sold off. For two new tracks across London Road at Heeley it would require two new sets of girders. I think if they were proposed Network Rail would probably have to raise the rail level for them and quite possibly the current two as well to allow the road more clearance below. It floods very easily at present.

It would be good to see this list divided between line reopenings, reopened/new stations, and timetable/service enhancements.

I don't know where this list came from but I heard today from the DfT that Harrogate-Ripon-Northallerton is NOT registered with them in the Ideas Fund. Wishful thinking on someone's part. I suspect most on this list is wishful thinking as I cannot think that this many MPs have given their support to that many reinstated llines.

Of all of the hopeless cases on this list, Rhyl-Corwen seems the most ridiculous. Who is on favour (other than a local councillor who's Dad took him on a footplate ride in the 60s)?

Surely it can’t beat Aber - Carmarthen.

I am very disappointed that the Selby-Market Weighton-Driffield line is not on the list, let alone a priority. It surely has as much merit as some of the entries?

On a more serious note, 60 schemes will give bounteous work for consultants to do feasibility studies? Might be some money left for one or two lines, most likely in or around conurbations.

I think it's probably an order of magnitude more pointless, @Bald Rick - at least Aber-Carmathen connects somewhere-somewhere....
Didn’t the line go through Ruthin, Denbigh and St Asaph? I’d argue that is rather more population, in rather less distance, than, err, Lampeter.

Yes, but the passenger service south of Ruthin went as early as Feb 1953, only just outlasting the Mid-Suffolk! Would this be the first pre-Beeching closure reinstated to the national network?
