Robert Stevenson, the grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson, built the Sumburgh lighthouse in Dunrossness Parish in 1821. He is more famous for the Bell Rock (aka Inchcape Rock) lighthouse off the coast of the Scottish mainland at Arbroath, built between 1807 and 1810 and now the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse.

The Rev Donald Caskie, also known as the "Tartan Pimpernel" for his wartime exploits in France, is one of Bowmore's most noted sons. He was responsible for the safe passage of numerous exiles through the Scots Kirk in Paris during World War II, risking both life and limb. He was born in Bowmore on 22nd May 1902, and died on 27th December 1983, aged 81, in Greenock.

Golborne was once the home of Colonel Blood, chiefly famous for attempting to steal the Crown Jewels, for which he was pardoned by Charles II because of the amusement the escapade provided. The Colonel had a very complicated life, serving in the armies of both Charles I and Cromwell during the Civil War and at one time practising as an apothecary in Romford, Essex.
